Part of the lacrimal functional unit, the cornea protects the ocular surface from numerous environmental aggressions and xenobiotics. Toxicological evaluation of compounds remains a challenge due to complex interactions between corneal nerve endings and epithelial cells. To this day, models do not integrate the physiological specificity of corneal nerve endings and are insufficient for the detection of low toxic effects essential to anticipate Toxicity-Induced Dry Eye (TIDE).

Background: Kangaroo rats are small mammals that are among the most abundant vertebrates in many terrestrial ecosystems in Western North America and are considered both keystone species and ecosystem engineers, providing numerous linkages between other species as both consumers and resources. However, there are challenges to studying the behavior and activity of these species due to the difficulty of observing large numbers of individuals that are small, secretive, and nocturnal. Our goal was to develop an integrated approach of miniaturized animal-borne accelerometry and radiotelemetry to classify the cryptic behavior and activity cycles of kangaroo rats and test hypotheses of how their behavior is influenced by light cycles, moonlight, and weather.

Nitrogenous pollutants derived from human activities not only pose direct risk on aquatic organisms but may also indirectly endanger the stability of interspecific relations. To date, the effects of the nitrogen-containing pollutants on the induced defense remain unclear. Here, we aim to investigate the induced defense of an aquatic keystone species, Daphnia pulex, which responds to predation risk under nitrite pollution at environmentally relevant concentrations and simultaneously evaluate the effects of their induced defenses on nitrite tolerance.

The extensive use of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) has raised concerns regarding their environmental fate and potential risks to the ecosystem. As sensitive pollution indicators, green microalgae could readily monitor the aquatic toxicity of QACs as reflective of the changes in cell viability. Recent microfluidic-based systems have been designed for environmental biomonitoring and ecotoxicity studies while overall information of cell viability cannot be directly visualized under flowing conditions.
