Foliar fertilization with selenium (Se) may well be beneficial in increasing the nutritional and qualitative values of food in Se-deficient regions such as the Mediterranean Basin, and may contribute to an increase in drought resistance in plants. The present study has considered detachment force, flesh firmness, pigmentation, fresh and dry weight, and oil content of olive drupes from Se fertilized olive orchards ( L.) under drought stress and well-watered conditions. This study has also evaluated the total Se, Se amino acid, phenol, carotenoid and chlorophyll contents of EVOO, plus its oxidative stability against oxidation. While there was no change in the ripening indexes and the production of olives generally, Se application did increase the total Se, Se methionine, phenol, and carotenoid and chlorophyll contents. The higher concentration of these (bio) chemical compounds in EVOO obtained from Se fertilized plants might well suggest enhanced antioxidant activity. Consequently, EVOO obtained from Se fertilized trees possesses a higher nutritional value and, as indicated by the greater oxidative stability against oxidation, longer shelf life. In addition, under water deficient conditions, a higher fresh olive weight corresponds to a higher level of phenol, carotenoid and chlorophyll, and the chlorophyll-to-carotenoid ratio in Se fertilized trees would appear to confirm the positive role of selenium in alleviating damage caused by drought stress conditions.

Capacitive-based radiofrequency (Rf) radiation at 27 MHz offers a non-invasive approach for inducing hyperthermia, making it a promising technique for thermal cancer therapy applications. To achieve focused and site-specific hyperthermia, external material is required that efficiently convert Rf radiation into localized heat. Nanomaterials capable of absorbing Rf energy and convert into heat for targeted ablation are of critical importance.

Organic redox systems that can undergo oxidative and reductive (ambipolar) electron transfer are elusive yet attractive for applications across synthetic chemistry and energy science. Specifically, the use of ambipolar redox systems in proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions is largely unexplored but could enable "switchable" reactivity wherein the uptake and release of hydrogen atoms are controlled using a redox stimulus. Here, we describe the synthesis and characterization of an ambipolar functionalized terthiophene (TTH) bearing methyl thioether and phosphine oxide groups that exhibits switchable PCET reactivity.

Objective: Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI) is a highly complex disease with high morbidity and mortality. Studying the molecular mechanism of MIRI and discovering new targets are crucial for the future treatment of MIRI.
Methods: We constructed the MIRI rat model and hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) injury cardiomyocytes model.

In recent years, there has been a surge in the production of kombucha-a functional beverage obtained via microbial fermentation of tea. However, fresh, unpasteurized kombucha is sensitive to quality deterioration as a result of, among other factors, oxidation. The addition of hops seems to be promising, due to their antioxidative properties, which may improve the stability of kombucha.

The development of Pd-based materials with high activity and long-term stability is crucial for their practical applications as an anode catalyst in direct formic acid fuel cells. Herein, we reveal that the catalytic activity of Pd towards formic acid oxidation can be enhanced by incorporation of a series of rare-earth oxides, including ScO, CeO, LaO, and PrO. For example, Pd nanoparticles incorporated with ScO supported on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (Pd-ScO/N-rGO-, = 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 1, and 3/2; "" denotes the molar ratio of Pd : Sc) can be obtained using a sodium borohydride reduction method.
