Background/aim: Cataract is the leading cause of reversible blindness and visual impairment worldwide. Although cataract surgery using phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is one of the commonest surgical procedures, IOL opacification remains a potential complication that can affect the visual outcome of the operation.

Case Report: A 50-year-old female patient presented to our clinic complaining of glare and blurry vision in her right eye over the previous 6 weeks. She had undergone bilateral refractive lens exchange elsewhere 9 months earlier. Her unaided distance visual acuity was 8/10 in the right eye and 10/10 in the left. On slit-lamp examination, we observed the presence of in-the-bag, multifocal, hydrophobic acrylic IOLs bilaterally. Specifically, calcified deposits within the substance of the IOL were observed.

Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first case of spontaneous calcification of a hydrophobic multifocal IOL and all cataract/refractive surgeons should be aware of this rare complication.

A decade of intracapsular cataract extraction: Clinical profile and visual outcomes at Hospital Melaka, Malaysia.

Med J Malaysia

January 2025

Universiti Sains Malaysia, School of Medical Sciences, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Health Campus, Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, Malaysia.

Introduction: Cataract is a leading cause of visual impairment globally and in Malaysia, with surgery being the definitive treatment. While intracapsular cataract extraction (ICCE) is now less commonly performed due to advancements in surgical techniques, it remains essential in specific cases, such as those with weak zonular support. This study aims to evaluate the incidence, clinical profiles, and visual outcomes of patients who underwent ICCE, with or without intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, at Hospital Melaka, Malaysia, over the past decade.

Background: Pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (CME) following primary anterior-chamber intraocular lens (ACIOL) implantations is commonly seen. Intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) injections have shown significant improvement in visual acuity and retinal thickness in refractory pseudophakic CME. Pseudohypopyon following IVTA injection is a known entity.

Impact of central corneal astigmatism on postoperative visual outcomes in patients undergoing trifocal intraocular lens implantation.

BMC Ophthalmol

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, Eye & ENT Hospital, Fudan University, 83 Fenyang Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai, 200031, China.

Background: To investigate the impact of central corneal astigmatism on postoperative visual outcomes in patients with trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.

Methods: This retrospective study included 278 eyes of 278 patients who underwent uneventful cataract surgery with implantation of the trifocal IOL (AT LISA tri 839MP). Patients were divided into two groups according to the total corneal refractive power (TCRP) in 3 mm zone centered on the corneal apex: low astigmatism group, TCRP ≤ 0.

Introduction: In the era of functional intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, it is crucial to investigate the influence of different capsulorhexis sizes (including the diameter of the capsulorhexis, area of the anterior capsule opening, anterior capsule coverage, centration and circularity of the capsulorhexis) on the postoperative outcomes (eg, visual acuity, capsule shrinkage, IOL stability and intraocular pressure) in patients undergoing cataract surgery. This is particularly important in patients with high myopia or diabetes mellitus. The proposed protocol aims to enhance the transparency of our research and offer references for future studies.

Background: Extended monovision is a novel mix-and-match approach that has been recently introduced. It involves implanting an aspherical monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) for distance vision in the dominant eye, and a bifocal extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOL in the nondominant eye. The target refraction for the nondominant eye is - 1.
