Growth Parameters and Prevalence of Obesity in PKU Patients and Peers: Is This the Right Comparison?

Pediatr Rep

October 2024

Department of Metabolic Diseases, Clinical Genetics and Diabetology, Giovanni XXIII Children Hospital, Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Consorziale, 70126 Bari, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines long-term growth trends in children with Phenylketonuria (PKU) compared to healthy peers, focusing on their body mass index (BMI) and weight-for-length ratio.
  • Results show that PKU children's median BMI z-scores were within the normal range, similar to controls, but their weight distributions were broader, particularly peaking around 3 years old.
  • Despite comparable rates of overweight between the two groups, the higher prevalence of overweight in the general population raises concerns about the nutritional risks for PKU patients.

Lack of detectable HPV18 antibodies in 14% of quadrivalent vaccinees in a longitudinal cohort study.

NPJ Vaccines

August 2024

Center for Cervical Cancer Elimination, Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.

Although HPV vaccines are highly efficacious, a notable proportion of quadrivalent vaccinees are HPV18 seronegative post-vaccination. We have investigated this findings' validity by comparing vaccine-induced antibody responses using two different immunoassays. 6558 16-17-year-old females participated in the FUTURE II (NCT00092534) and PATRICIA (NCT00122681) trials in 2002-2004.

Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) / acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) infection has been a serious health problem in pediatric age groups globally, and especially in African countries such as Angola. Our aim was to determine the prevalence rate, accumulate incidence rate, and mortality rate of HIV/AIDS infection in children under 14 years of age residing in four municipalities of Malanje (Malanje, Cacuso, Calandula, and Caculama), from 2010 to 2021.

Methodology: This was a documentary research study, with data from 2010 to 2021, developed from a sample size of 10,984 children.
