AI Article Synopsis

  • cRAGE is identified as a new inflammatory marker linked to disease severity and outcomes in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH).
  • In a study involving 108 aSAH patients, higher levels of plasma cRAGE were found compared to controls, and these levels correlated with established severity scores.
  • cRAGE levels not only correlate with these scores but also serve as an independent predictor of poor outcomes after six months, enhancing the predictive ability of traditional assessment tools.

Article Abstract

Background: Cleaved receptor for advanced glycation end-products (cRAGE) has been introduced as a new inflammatory marker. We clarified the associations between cRAGE levels, disease severity and functional outcome in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH).

Methods: In this prospective, observational study, plasma levels of total soluble RAGE (sRAGE) and endogenous secretory RAGE (esRAGE) were quantified in 108 aSAH patients and 108 controls. The level of cRAGE was calculated by subtracting the level of esRAGE from that of sRAGE. World Federation of Neurological Surgeons (WFNS) score, modified Fisher score, and Hunt Hess (HH) score were recorded to assess aSAH severity. Relationship between plasma cRAGE levels and 6-month poor outcome (Glasgow Outcome Scale score of 1-3) was assess using multivariate analysis.

Results: Plasma cRAGE levels were significantly higher in patients than in controls. Its levels were significantly correlated with WNFS score, modified Fisher score and HH score of patients. Plasma cRAGE emerged as an independent predictor for 6-month poor outcome. Area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of this biomarker was similar to those of WNFS score, modified Fisher score and HH score. Moreover, it significantly improved AUCs of WNFS score, modified Fisher score and HH score.

Conclusions: Plasma cRAGE levels are highly associated with the severity and poor prognosis in aSAH.

Background: AGEs, their receptor (RAGE), and the extracellular newly identified receptor for AGEs product-binding protein (EN-RAGE) are implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammation.

Aim: We analyzed serum EN-RAGE, soluble RAGE (sRAGE), and their isoforms: endogenous secretory - esRAGE and cleaved - cRAGE concentrations in lean controls (n = 74) and in patients with obesity (n = 71) treated for three weeks with moderate calorie restriction (CR) combined with physical activity in a hospital condition.

Methods: Using the ELISA method, serum sRAGE, esRAGE, and EN-RAGE were measured before and after CR.

Maize is the most-produced food crop in the world and is grown in intensive rotations or in monoculture (continuous maize) systems. As maize production has expanded massively across the world, many concerns have emerged about its local environmental and other global impacts. Agronomists have designed innovative cropping systems and assessed them using system experiments to make arable systems more sustainable.

Background: In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), there is an overproduction and accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). Since AGEs may have detrimental effects on muscular trophism and performance, we evaluated whether they may contribute to the onset of sarcopenia in CKD patients.

Methods: We enrolled 117 patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) and a receptor called sRAGE are important in how type 2 diabetes develops and gets worse.
  • In a study with 362 diabetes patients, researchers found that the levels of AGEs and sRAGE are higher in these patients than in healthy people, which shows a connection to higher death rates over 15 years.
  • They created a prediction tool using different health factors to help estimate how long patients with type 2 diabetes might live, based on their AGE and sRAGE levels.
