The placenta is vital to maternal and child health but often overlooked in pregnancy studies. Addressing the need for a more accessible and cost-effective method of placental assessment, our study introduces a computational tool designed for the analysis of placental photographs. Leveraging images and pathology reports collected from sites in the United States and Uganda over a 12-year period, we developed a cross-modal contrastive learning algorithm consisting of pre-alignment, distillation, and retrieval modules.

Inspect quantitative signals in placental histopathology: Computer-assisted multiple functional tissues identification through multi-model fusion and distillation framework.

Pathological analysis of placenta is currently a valuable tool for gaining insights into pregnancy outcomes. In placental histopathology, multiple functional tissues can be inspected as potential signals reflecting the transfer functionality between fetal and maternal circulations. However, the identification of multiple functional tissues is challenging due to (1) severe heterogeneity in texture, size and shape, (2) distribution across different scales and (3) the need for comprehensive assessment at the whole slide image (WSI) level.

Prenatal ultrasound scoring in diagnosis and postpartum outcomes prediction for Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS): a systematic review.

BMC Pregnancy Childbirth

December 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, 610072, China.

Background: Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is one of the most dangerous pregnancy-related conditions. This study aims to conduct a systematic review of current research on the ultrasound scoring systems used in PAS patients with a comprehensive summarization of researches and comparison of prenatal ultrasound scoring in evaluating postpartum outcomes.

Methods: This systematic review was conducted and reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.

Article Synopsis
  • Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a major health risk for pregnant women and fetuses, with recent studies indicating a possible connection between PE and a process called ferroptosis, which is cell death caused by iron accumulation.
  • Researchers utilized machine learning and non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) clustering to analyze gene expression data from multiple studies, identifying 41 genes related to ferroptosis in PE, and explored how these genes affect immune cell infiltration in placental tissue.
  • The study also involved predicting upstream transcription factors and creating a regulatory network related to ferroptosis, with experiments conducted on both cultured cells and rat models to better understand the mechanisms behind ferroptosis in PE conditions.
