Available measures of handwashing are prone to bias. We tested the feasibility and reliability of weighing soap at repeated visits and subtracting the measured weight from the prior weight to assess daily per capita soap consumption in a low-income community in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Fieldworkers approached 220 households twice weekly over 2 months. They interviewed participants, weighed soap, and assessed hand cleanliness and the presence of a handwashing station. Respondents used bar soap (91% [201]) and laundry detergent cakes (39% [85]) for handwashing as well as for bathing and laundry. Ninety-eight percent of households had bar soap present on at least one visit, although only 50% had bar soap at every visit during the 2-month period. Fieldworkers observed a soap fragment on the wall near the latrine in 27% (470) of visits. Households consumed a mean 1.5 g of bar soap and 3.2 g detergent cake per person per day. Daily per capita soap consumption was similar in households visited by fieldworkers after different intervals (2, 3, 4, or 5 days). Soap consumption was not associated with household wealth, education of the household head, the presence of a handwashing station, the presence of water or soap at a handwashing station, or palm inspections of the mother or child. Soap weight measurements were an objective, reliable measure of soap consumption that provided different information from other handwashing indicators. The frequent use of a soap product for purposes other than handwashing complicates using soap consumption as a handwashing measure.

Objective: The biodegradability of organic chemicals with usual down-the-drain disposal in their end-of-life is a key parameter to be considered by industries pursuing sustainability in their new product developments. It is a property that, once improved in any formulated product portfolio, will allow for a significant reduction in the presence of its ingredients in the natural environment, with a potential reduction in the pollution-related environmental impact after consumption. This article aimed to propose an intelligent strategy for addressing biodegradability in the cosmetics sector, with the potential to support both product claims and corporate sustainability initiatives.

Maternal & Child Wasting Project, Result for Development (USA), Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Background: Poor child health and hygiene practices are persistent issues in resource-constrained settings, particularly in low-income countries. This study assessed the impact of skill-based health education (SBHE) on school and child hygiene practices in rural Bangladesh.
Methods: A cluster-randomised-controlled intervention with cross-cutting/factorial design was conducted in 180 randomly selected primary schools, stratified by school type, in Jhenaidah District, Bangladesh.

Vegetables are an essential component of a balanced diet. The consumption of ready-to-eat foods may lead to the risk of infections and illnesses due to microbial contamination. To mitigate the potential of microbial contamination risks, it is critical to promote safe handling practices among consumers.

Solid-state NMR has established itself as a cutting-edge spectroscopy for elucidating the structure of oxide glasses thanks to several decades of methodological and instrumental progress. First-principles calculations of NMR properties combined with molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations provides a powerful complementary approach for the interpretation of NMR data, although they still suffer from limitations in terms of size, time and high consumption of computational resources. We address this challenge by developing a machine-learning framework to boost predictive modelling of NMR spectra.

This study assesses the impact of financial incentives on hygienic latrine ownership by poor/near-poor households in Vietnam. Rural communes were randomly assigned to a control group and three treatment arm groups: (T1) a rebate for households that installed a hygienic latrine; (T2) a financial reward for commune governments if the proportion of hygienic latrines in their commune increased by 30 percentage points; (T3) both a household rebate and a commune reward. We find a strong and positive effect from the household rebate (treatment arms 1 and 3) but an insignificant effect from the commune reward (treatment arm 2) on household ownership of a septic tank latrine.
