Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a naturally occurring mycotoxin mainly produced by certain species of and and is a serious threat to human health and food safety. Previous studies showed that ML17 can completely degrade 1 μg/mL of OTA. The aim of this study was to investigate the degradation effect of ML17 at different concentrations of OTA, and specifically, to investigate the mechanism of OTA degradation by ML17.

Case report: Unveiling the silent threat in the ICU - a case of disseminated invasive aspergillosis in a patient with fulminant myocarditis.

Front Immunol

December 2024

Fourth Department of Critical Care Medicine, Shengli Clinical Medical College of Fujian Medical University, Fujian Provincial Hospital, Fuzhou University Affiliated Provincial Hospital, Fuzhou, Fujian, China.

Invasive aspergillosis (IA) significantly increases mortality in critically ill patients in the ICU and its occurrence is closely related to immunocompromise. Dissemination of IA is easily misdiagnosed and mistreated due to its ability to invade multiple systems throughout the body and lack of typical clinical manifestations. In this case, a 25-year-old previously healthy woman was hospitalized with fulminant myocarditis and treated with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane pulmonary oxygenation (VA-ECMO) support and intravenous acyclovir, high-dose methylprednisolone, and immunoglobulin.

Transcriptional memory drives accelerated re-activation of several biosynthetic gene clusters in Aspergillus nidulans.

Organisms are repeatedly exposed to fluctuating environmental and nutritional conditions. Transcriptional memory has been shown to be a mechanism to cope with these fluctuations because it increases the speed and the magnitude of the cellular response to a certain re-occurring condition and therefore optimizes adaptation and fitness in a given environment. We found that genes coding for sterigmatocystin (ST) production in Aspergillus nidulans are activated stronger when cells are repeatedly exposed to nutrient starvation, compared to cells that experience this condition for the first time.

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a disorder of immunity characterized by phagocyte dysfunction. Mold infections in patients with CGD are often severe and disseminated. We present patient characteristics, microbiological data, and outcomes for 26 patients with CGD who received hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) or gene therapy-modified cells (GT) between 2008 and 2019, with proven fungal infection either before or during their transplant.

In northern Tamaulipas, México, the contamination of corn by toxigenic fungi reduces grain production and quality. Corn contaminated by mycotoxins puts humans and livestock at risk. Continuous monitoring of the sanitary quality of grain at harvest and in storage will define preventive and corrective strategies for contamination by mycotoxigenic fungi.
