Published: December 2018

Double Helix Rainbow Kids is a letter to the editor in conjunction with the forthcoming issue on autism and gender that discusses the intersection between autism and gender expansiveness, calling on extant research, clinical observations at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Child and Adolescent Gender Center and other clinics, as well as personal narratives. It alerts the reader to the importance of giving full attention to the gender stress or gender dysphoria that often accompanies autism spectrum in children, making constitutional-psychological-social links between neurodiversity and gender diversity.

Structural features, physiological functions and digestive properties of phosphorylated corn starch: A comparative study of four phosphorylating agents and two preparation methods.

Int J Biol Macromol

Phosphorylation is an important modification to modulate functional and digestive properties of starches. We systematically investigated starch phosphorylation process parameters by using two different preparation methods (slurry and semi-dry conditions) and four commonly used phosphorylating agents, namely sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP), STMP/STPP (99: 1), and sodium phytate (SP). The effects of phosphorylation on physicochemical characteristics, techno-functionalities, digestive properties and structural features of corn starch were analyzed.

Toward Zero Static Friction at the Microscale.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Center for Nano and Micro Mechanics, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

Static friction, a ubiquitous physical phenomenon, plays a significant role in natural processes and industrial applications. Its influence is particularly notable in the field of controlled micromanipulation and precision manufacturing, where static friction often exceeds kinetic friction and leads to material damage and unpredictable behaviors. In this study, we report the first experimental observation of the elimination of static friction peak in sliding micrometer contacts of layered materials, achieved through a technique involving selective etching of the amorphous edges of single crystalline surfaces.

Gem-like starch granules engineered with different crystalline starches.

The retrogradation property endows starch molecules with the unique ability to self-assemble crystals after encountering damage, which can restore the internal double helix structure to a limited extent. We devise a simple set of steps to grow perfect crystals of uniform size with different crystal systems in a given growth environment by first customizing the crystal seeds through enzymatic modification, and then exploiting the spontaneous recrystallization of starch. Optical microscopy confirmed the formation of gem-like starch granules (GSGs) in starches with 24.

Two-dimensional Nanosheets by Liquid Metal Exfoliation.

Adv Mater

December 2024

Institute of Materials Research, Center of Double Helix, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Thermal Management Engineering and Materials, Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Advanced Layered Materials for Value-added Applications, Institute of Materials Research, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University, Shenzhen, 518055, P. R. China.

Liquid exfoliation is a scalable and effective method for synthesizing 2D nanosheets (NSs) but often induces contamination and defects. Here, liquid metal gallium (Ga) is used to exfoliate bulk layered materials into 2D NSs at near room temperature, utilizing the liquid surface tension and Ga intercalation to disrupt Van der Waals (vdW) forces. In addition, the process can transform the 2H-phase of transition metal dichalcogenides into the 1T'-phase under ambient conditions.

Understanding the protein conformation transition within polymer hydrogels using a near-infrared water spectroscopy probe.

Int J Biol Macromol

For understanding the behavior of the active substance in vivo, the near-infrared (NIR) spectral variations of ovalbumin (OVA) loaded in poly(N, N-dimethyl acrylamide) (PDMAA) hydrogel with temperature were investigated. Analyzing the spectra with improved resolution by continuous wavelet transform (CWT), the absorption variation of the peak at 4851 cm arising from the α-helix of OVA with temperature was studied. The results show that a sharp decrease occurs at a lower temperature in PDMAA hydrogel, indicating that the unfolding of OVA in PDMAA hydrogel is facilitated.
