The P-transposable element is an example of mobile DNA transferred horizontally and known to have spread globally over the last 50-60 years. In , the P-element causes a syndrome known as 'P-M hybrid dysgenesis' that obstructs normal ovary development in the female progeny of susceptible populations. Despite extensive research, the stability and global population dynamics of P-M dysgenic phenotypes remain poorly understood. Here, we report a recent and rapid transition in the P-M status of populations from Ukraine. We demonstrate that these populations are currently dominated by the P'-cytotype characterized by active genomic P-elements and unknown from Ukraine just two decades ago. Our results suggest a recent invasion of the P-element in Ukraine, a pattern that matches recent discoveries from Turkey.

Background: Vancomycin, an antibiotic with activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), is frequently included in empiric treatment for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) despite the fact that MRSA is rarely implicated in CAP. Conducting polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing on nasal swabs to identify the presence of MRSA colonization has been proposed as an antimicrobial stewardship intervention to reduce the use of vancomycin. Observational studies have shown reductions in vancomycin use after implementation of MRSA colonization testing, and this approach has been adopted by CAP guidelines.

The present study demonstrates the applicability of non-destructive and rapid spectroscopic techniques, specifically laser-induced fluorescence, ultraviolet-visible, and confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy, as non-invasive, eco-friendly, and robust multi-compound analytical methods for assessing biochemical changes in maize seedling leaves resulting from the treatment of aluminium oxide nanoparticles. The recorded fluorescence spectrum of the leaves shows that the treatment of different concentration of aluminium oxide nanoparticles decreases the chlorophyll content as observed by the increase in fluorescence emission intensity ratio (FIR = I/I). The analysis of ultraviolet-visible absorption measurements reveals that the amount of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll and carotenoid decrease for treated plants with respect to untreated seedlings.

Background/aim: Autosomal-recessive carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase deficiency (CACTD) is a rare disorder of long-chain fatty acid oxidation caused by variants in the SLC25A20 gene. Under fasting conditions, most newborns with severe CACTD experience sudden cardiac arrest and hypotonia, often leading to premature death due to rapid disease progression. Understanding of genetic factors and pathogenic mechanisms in CACTD is essential for its diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
