The tear lysozyme levels were measured by immunoassay in 92 healthy subjects and 98 patients with acute adenovirus conjunctivitis. They were found to be significantly decreased during the acute phase of the disease. The extent of this decline in the tear lysozyme level was correlated with increased severity of disease. There was no significant difference in the tear lysozyme level in viral isolation-positive and isolation-negative patients. The tear lysozyme level showed return to normal levels with clinical improvement.

The tear fluids from three healthy individuals and three patients with diabetes mellitus were examined using atomic force microscopy-infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The dried tear samples showed different surface morphologies: the control sample had a dense network of heart-shaped dendrites, while the diabetic sample had fern-shaped dendrites. By using the AFM-IR technique we identified spatial distribution of constituents, indicating how diabetes affects the structural characteristics of dried tears.

When placed in the eye, contact lenses (CLs) disturb the tear fluid and affect the natural tribological behaviour of the eye. The disruption in the contact mechanics between the ocular tissues can increase frictional shear stress and ocular dryness, causing discomfort. Ultimately, continuous CLs wear can trigger inflammation which is particularly critical for people suffering from dry eye.

A novel poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-methacrylated hyaluronan-β-cyclodextrin) [p(HEMA-co-mHA-β-CD)] hydrogel was developed as a potential contact lens for ophthalmic disease. The hydrogel was synthesized from the copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) monomer and mHA-β-CD as a hydrophilic macromolecular crosslinker. By adjusting the methacrylate substitution degree in hyaluronan (20-29 %) and the mHA-β-CD content (5-11 %), transparent p(HEMA-co-mHA-β-CD) hydrogels were achieved.

Purpose: To explore the complex interface between the tear film, a unique mucosal fluid which is fundamental to ocular homeostasis and optimal vision, and an in-situ contact lens. This study exploits the use of a unique tear envelope (TE) extraction technique, which harvests the material-influenced layer of tear film that is in intimate contact with the lens during wear, to specifically investigate the influence of contact lens wear on tear film protein dynamics.
Methods: TEs were collected from freshly removed worn lens using a novel microcentrifuge 'piggyback' technique.
