The well-established generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation (GNLSE) to simulate nonlinear pulse propagation in optical fibers and waveguides becomes inefficient if only narrow spectral bands are occupied that are widely separated in frequency/wavelength, for example in parametric amplifiers. Here we present a solution to this in the form of a coupled frequency-banded nonlinear Schrödinger equation (BNLSE) that only simulates selected narrow frequency bands while still including all dispersive and nonlinear effects, in particular the inter-band Raman and Kerr nonlinearities. This allows for high accuracy spectral resolution in regions of interest while omitting spectral ranges between the selected frequency bands, thus providing an efficient and accurate way for simulating the nonlinear interaction of pulses at widely different carrier frequencies. We derive and test our BNLSE by comparison with the GNLSE. We finally demonstrate the accuracy of the BNLSE and compare the computational execution times for the different models.

Coastal vertical land motion (VLM), including uplift and subsidence, can greatly alter relative sea level projections and flood mitigations plans. Yet, current projection frameworks, such as the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, often underestimate VLM by relying on regional linear estimates. Using high-resolution (90-meter) satellite data from 2015 to 2023, we provide local VLM estimates for California and assess their contribution to sea level rise both now and in future.

Microcavity exciton polaritons (polaritons) as part-light part-matter quasiparticles garner considerable attention for Bose-Einstein condensation at elevated temperatures. Recently, halide perovskites have emerged as promising room-temperature polaritonic platforms because of their large exciton binding energies and superior optical properties. However, currently, inducing room-temperature nonequilibrium polariton condensation in perovskite microcavities requires optical pulsed excitations with high excitation densities.

Focused on a Black male student, Travis, the study examines how his science identity was shaped through entanglements with various material and discursive forces across multiple science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine (STEMM) learning spaces. Becoming-scientist-with is conceptualized as a continual negotiation of identity within these environments, emphasizing the roles of power, systemic racism, and institutional practices in shaping students' experiences.

Josephson junction parametric amplifiers have become essential tools for microwave quantum circuit readout with minimal added noise. Even after improving at an impressive rate in the past decade, they remain vulnerable to magnetic fields, which limits their use in many applications such as spin qubits, Andreev and molecular magnet devices, dark matter searches, etc. Kinetic inductance materials, such as granular aluminum (grAl), offer an alternative source of nonlinearity with innate magnetic field resilience.

We reveal a new scenario for the transition of solitons to chaos in a mode-locked fiber laser: the modulated subharmonic route. Its universality is confirmed in two different laser configurations, namely, a figure-of-eight and a ring laser. Numerical simulations of the laser models agree well with the experiments.
