Despite significant advances in the analysis and visualization of unsteady flow, the interpretation of it's behavior still remains a challenge. In this work, we focus on the linear correlation and non-linear dependency of different physical attributes of unsteady flows to aid their study from a new perspective. Specifically, we extend the existing spatial correlation quantification, i.e. the Local Correlation Coefficient (LCC), to the spatio-temporal domain to study the correlation of attribute-pairs from both the Eulerian and Lagrangian views. To study the dependency among attributes, which need not be linear, we extend and compute the mutual information (MI) among attributes over time. To help visualize and interpret the derived correlation and dependency among attributes associated with a particle, we encode the correlation and dependency values on individual pathlines. Finally, to utilize the correlation and MI computation results to identify regions with interesting flow behavior, we propose a segmentation strategy of the flow domain based on the ranking of the strength of the attributes relations. We have applied our correlation and dependency metrics to a number of 2D and 3D unsteady flows with varying spatio-temporal kernel sizes to demonstrate and assess their effectiveness.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is strongly correlated with obesity, partially due to the abnormal expansion of abdominal perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT). Cell death-inducing DNA fragmentation factor-like effector C (CIDEC), also known as fat-specific protein 27 (FSP27) in rodents, is specifically expressed in adipose tissue where it mediates lipid droplet fusion and adipose tissue expansion. Whether and how CIDEC/FSP27 plays a role in AAA pathology remains elusive.

Epidemiological evidence suggests that post-menopausal women are more susceptible to HIV infection following sexual intercourse than are younger cohorts for reasons that remain unclear. Here, we evaluated how menopause-associated changes in CD4 T cell numbers and subsets as well as HIV coreceptor expression, particularly CCR5, in the endometrium (EM), endocervix (CX), and ectocervix (ECX) may alter HIV infection susceptibility. Using a tissue-specific mixed cell infection model, we demonstrate that while no changes in CD14 macrophage infection susceptibility were observed, CD4 T cell HIV-1 infection frequency increases following menopause in the EM, but not CX nor ECX.

A role for the plasminogen activator (PA) system has been postulated in mammalian gonads, considering the complex process of morphogenesis these organs undergo during their development. Our results show that mouse Sertoli cells under basal conditions produce both types of PA, tissue-type PA (tPA) and urokinase-type PA (uPA), and hormonal treatments increase the production of both enzymes. The increased enzyme secretion does not correlate with a parallel increase in their mRNAs.

This work uses MoTe single crystals to address the challenge in heterogeneous catalysis of identifying active sites and determining the electronic factors responsible for catalytic activity. We find that for semiconducting MoTe, spots that fall along step edges show more catalytic activity than spots that fall solely on the basal plane. In contrast, for a semimetallic phase of MoTe, there is no measurable difference between the H evolution activity at the step edges and at the basal plane, indicating that the active sites for H evolution catalysis on transition metal dichalcogenides are phase dependent.
