We present toBeeView, a program that produces from a digital photograph, or a set of photographs, an approximation of the image formed at the sampling station stage in the eye of an animal. toBeeView is freely available from https://github.com/EEZA-CSIC/compound-eye-simulator. toBeeView assumes that sampling stations in the retina are distributed on a hexagonal grid. Each sampling station computes the weighted average of the color of the part of the visual scene projecting on its photoreceptors, and the hexagon of the output image associated with the sampling station is filled in this average color. Users can specify the visual angle subtended by the scene and the basic parameters determining the spatial resolution of the eye: photoreceptor spatial distribution and optic quality of the eye. The photoreceptor distribution is characterized by the vertical and horizontal interommatidial angles-which can vary along the retina. The optic quality depends on the section of the visual scene projecting onto each sampling station, determined by the acceptance angle. The output of toBeeView provides a first approximation to the amount of visual information available at the retina for subsequent processing, summarizing in an intuitive way the interaction between eye optics and receptor density. This tool can be used whenever it is important to determine the visual acuity of a species and will be particularly useful to study processes where object detection and identification is important, such as visual displays, camouflage, and mimicry.

The bulk phase of transition metal nitrides (TMNs) has long been a subject of extensive investigation due to their utility as coating materials, electrocatalysts, and diffusion barriers, attributed to their high conductivity and refractory properties. Downscaling TMNs into two-dimensional (2D) forms would provide valuable members to the existing 2D materials repertoire, with potential enhancements across various applications. Moreover, calculations have anticipated the emergence of uncommon physical phenomena in TMNs at the 2D limit.

City gas stations (CGSs) play a crucial role in ensuring a stable and safe supply of natural gas to urban users. However, as the service time of stations increases and the performance of components deteriorates, concerns about the safety and reliability of these station have grown among operators and local government authorities. This paper proposes a fuzzy reliability assessment methodology for CGSs that considers the polymorphism of component faults and the uncertainties associated with fault relationships, failure probabilities, and fault magnitudes.

This study determined the concentrations and seasonal variations of phthalate esters (PAEs) in water and sediment samples of the receiving stream within the vicinity of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife dumpsite. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pollution status of the study area by determining the levels of PAEs in water and sediment samples. This assessment aimed to understand the presence and extent of phthalate ester pollution in the study area.

With 40 million annual passenger flights, airports are key hubs for microbial communities from diverse geographic origins to converge, mix, and distribute. Wastewater derived from airports and aircraft represent both a potential route for the global dispersion of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) organisms and an under-utilised resource for strengthening global AMR surveillance. This study investigates the abundance and diversity of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in wastewater samples collected from airport terminals (n = 132), aircraft (n = 25), and a connected wastewater treatment plant (n = 11) at three international airports in the UK (London Heathrow, Edinburgh and Bristol).

Environmental characteristics drastically shape the host-parasite associations under natural conditions. This is the case of parasites such as avian haemosporidians which naturally infect birds and are transmitted by insect vectors. Landscape characteristics are known to determine the epidemiology of transmission of these parasites in the wild, but the strength of these factors may differ at different spatial scales.
