Individuals within the same population generally differ among each other not only in their behavioral traits but also in their level of behavioral plasticity (i.e., in their propensity to modify their behavior in response to changing conditions). If the proximate factors underlying individual differences in behavioral plasticity were the same for any measure of plasticity, as commonly assumed, one would expect plasticity to be repeatable across behaviors and contexts. However, this assumption remains largely untested. Here, we conducted an experiment with sailfin mollies () whose behavioral plasticity was estimated both as the change in their personality traits or mating behavior across a social gradient and using their performance on a reversal-learning task. We found that the correlations between pairwise measures of plasticity were weak and non-significant, thus indicating that the most plastic individuals were not the same in all the tests. This finding might arise because either individuals adjust the magnitude of their behavioral responses depending on the benefits of plasticity, and/or individuals expressing high behavioral plasticity in one context are limited by neural and/or physiological constraints in the amount of plasticity they can express in other contexts. Because the repeatability of behavioral plasticity may have important evolutionary consequences, additional studies are needed to assess the importance of trade-offs between conflicting selection pressures on the maintenance of intra-individual variation in behavioral plasticity.

MicroRNA-204-5p Deficiency within the vmPFC Region Contributes to Neuroinflammation and Behavioral Disorders via the JAK2/STAT3 Signaling Pathway in Rats.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Mental Disorders, The Second Hospital of Shandong University, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, 250012, China.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is usually considered associate with immune inflammation and synaptic injury within specific brain regions. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the neural deterioration resulting in depression remain unclear. Here, it is found that miR-204-5p is markedly downregulated in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) in a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) induce rat model of depression.

Advanced technology and increasing knowledge about aging faces have combined to create the illusion of thread lifting to replace surgical interventions. However, results that came far beyond expectations led to a heavy suspicion of these tools. However, combined treatments with fillers would have better outcomes with a synergetic effect.

Background: Financial toxicity is the detrimental impact of health care costs that must be mitigated to achieve universal health coverage. Catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) is widely used to measure financial toxicity but does not capture patient perspectives of unaffordable health care costs. Financial hardship (FH), a patient-reported outcome measure, is currently underutilized but may be an important adjunct metric.

Cpeb1 remodels cell type-specific translational program to promote fear extinction.

Protein translation is crucial for fear extinction, a process vital for adaptive behavior and mental health, yet the underlying cell-specific mechanisms remain elusive. Using a Tet-On 3G genetic approach, we achieved precise temporal control over protein translation in the infralimbic medial prefrontal cortex () during fear extinction. In addition, our results reveal that the disruption of cytoplasmic polyadenylation element binding protein 1 (Cpeb1) leads to notable alterations in cell type-specific translational programs, thereby affecting fear extinction.

Clear cell kidney cancers are characterized both by conserved oncogenic driver events and by marked intratumor genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity, which help drive tumor progression, metastasis, and resistance to therapy. How these are reflected in transcriptional programs within the cancer and stromal cell components remains an important question with the potential to drive novel therapeutic approaches to treating cancer. To better understand these programs, we perform single-cell transcriptomics on 75 multi-regional biopsies from kidney tumors and normal kidney.
