Deficits in IL-2 signaling can precipitate autoimmunity by altering the function and survival of FoxP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) while high concentrations of IL-2 fuel inflammatory responses. Recently, we showed that the non-beta IL-2 SYNTHORIN molecule SAR444336 (SAR'336) can bypass the induction of autoimmune and inflammatory responses by increasing its reliance on IL-2 receptor α chain subunit (CD25) to provide a bona fide IL-2 signal selectively to Tregs, making it an attractive approach for the control of autoimmunity. In this report, we further demonstrate that SAR'336 can support non-beta IL-2 signaling in murine Tregs and limit NK and CD8+ T cells' proliferation and function.

Asymptomatic carriage of intestinal protists is common in children in Lusaka Province, Zambia.

PLoS Negl Trop Dis

December 2024

Parasitology Reference and Research Laboratory, Spanish National Centre for Microbiology, Health Institute Carlos III, Majadahonda, Madrid, Spain.

Background: PCR-based screenings on the presence of diarrhoea-causing intestinal protist species are limited in Zambia, resulting in inaccurate current prevalence and epidemiological data. Sensitive PCR-based methods are particularly well suited for detecting subclinical infections in apparently healthy carriers.

Methodology: In this prospective cross-sectional study, we investigated the occurrence of the most common intestinal protists in an apparently healthy paediatric population (5-18 years) in Lusaka Province, Zambia.

Background: Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) affects millions of people, and is an essential component of the long-term impact of COVID-19 during the post-pandemic era. Yet, consensus on clinical case definition and core components of PCC remains lacking, affecting our ability to inform research and evidence-based management. Our study aims 1) to identify the most specific symptoms for PCC, and identify clinical subtypes; 2) to evaluate both virus- and host-related determinants of PCC, and 3) assess the impact of PCC on physical and mental health.

Predicting glioblastoma progression using MR diffusion tensor imaging: A systematic review.

J Neuroimaging

December 2024

Cambridge Brain Tumour Imaging Laboratory, Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Addenbrooke's Hospital, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK.

Background And Purpose: Despite multimodal treatment of glioblastoma (GBM), recurrence beyond the initial tumor volume is inevitable. Moreover, conventional MRI has shortcomings that hinder the early detection of occult white matter tract infiltration by tumor, but diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a sensitive probe for assessing microstructural changes, facilitating the identification of progression before standard imaging. This sensitivity makes DTI a valuable tool for predicting recurrence.

Mortality and genetic diversity of antibiotic-resistant bacteria associated with bloodstream infections: a systemic review and genomic analysis.

BMC Infect Dis

December 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics, College of Public Health, Zhengzhou University, No. 100 Kexue Avenue, Zhengzhou, Henan, 450001, People's Republic of China.

Background: Bloodstream infections (BSIs) caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) represent a significant disease burden worldwide. However, a comprehensive analysis of the mortality rates and global epidemiology across different ARB species associated with BSIs is currently lacking.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review by searching multiple databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase) for studies reporting ARB-related BSIs data up to June 19, 2023.
