Strong evidence supports the paramount importance of the composition of the diet for health. Not only diet should provide nutritional adequacy, but some foods and dietary components can also support the management of common chronic diseases, with mechanisms independent of nutritional adequacy. Among the various intervention diets, low-fat vegan diets have been shown to be effective for cardiometabolic health, mainly influencing insulin resistance, adiposity, and blood lipids.

The emerging field of prospective life cycle assessment (pLCA) offers opportunities for evaluating the environmental impacts of possible future consumption shifts. One such shift involves a transition from meat-based to plant-forward diets, acknowledged to mitigate environmental impacts of the food system under present day conditions. Current diets are often meat intensive ("meat-based"), whilst "plant-forward" diets include mainly plant-based foods, encompassing flexitarian, vegetarian, and vegan diets.

Background: An increasing number of people, including recreational trained individuals, choose not to consume animal products and follow a vegan diet. The transition toward plant-based (PB) diets has gained attention as a plausible step toward achieving sustainable and healthy dietary goals. However, the complete elimination of all animal-sourced foods from the diet (ie, a vegan diet) may have nutritional ramifications that warrant close examination. Two such concerns are the adequacy and bioavailability of amino acids (AAs) from plant-sourced foods and the consequences for older vegan populations who have elevated AA requirements.
