In this research, we present results of simulated annealing (SA), a heuristic optimization algorithm, for focusing light through a turbid medium. Performance of the algorithm on phase and amplitude modulations has been evaluated. A number of tips to tune the optimization parameters are provided. The effect of measurement noise on the performance of the SA algorithm is explored. Additionally, SA performance is compared with continuous sequential and briefly with other optimization algorithms.

This study explores the effect of fatty acid chain length in regulating the structural changes and physicochemical properties of high-amylose maize starch (HAMS) induced by annealing with fatty acid solution (AFAS). AFAS was found to effectively regulate the conformation of amylose molecular chains within starch granules. Annealing with fatty acids of shorter chain length, such as lauric acid, promoted the formation of both double and single helices within HAMS granules.

From molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of melt-quenching and thermal aging procedures in pure Ag, Cu, Ag-Cu binary alloys, and Cu-Zr binary alloys, we have identified two distinct amorphous phases for a metastable undercooled liquid: the homogeneous L-phase with low shear rigidity and the heterogenous G-phase with much higher shear rigidity and a heterogeneity length scale Λ. Here, we examine two-phase equilibration studies showing that the G-phase melts to form the L-phase above ~1,000 K, which then transforms to form the crystal (X) phase; however, below the melting point of the G-Phase (~990 K), the X- and G-phases do not transform into each other. We suggest the presence of a G-phase is likely responsible for embrittlement often observed in metallic glasses.

Context: Understanding the structural characteristics of coal at the molecular level is fundamental for its effective utilization. To explore the molecular structure characteristic, the long-flame coal from Daliuta (DLT), coking coal from Yaoqiao (YQ), and anthracite from Taixi (TX) were investigated using various techniques such as elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, solid-state C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Self-assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) in solution has garnered tremendous attention among researchers because of their electrical, chemical, and optoelectronic properties at the macroscale with potential applications in bio-imaging, bio-medicine, and therapeutics. Control of size, shape, and composition at the nanoscale is important in tuning the material's bulk properties. The grafting of NPs with polymers enables us to tune such bulk material properties at the nano level by controlling their assemblies, especially in solutions.
