Introduction: There is relatively little data on the preparedness of UK dental graduates for independent general dental practice. Two recent studies have indicated that graduates appear well prepared, but although quantifying the level of preparedness, they provide limited understanding of the underlying factors contributing to preparedness. This study aims to more deeply understand the contributing factors leading to assertions of graduate preparedness using focus groups of final year dental students, and semi-structured interviews of senior faculty members.
Materials And Methods: Three UK dental schools were visited in order to conduct both study elements. Focus groups and semi-structured interviews were audio recorded and fully transcribed. Thematic analysis of the transcripts resulted in the production of a thematic matrix.
Results: The major categories of the thematic matrix were classified as extrinsic; including the role of educators and features of the course, and intrinsic; relating to fear of the unknown, the development of adult learning abilities and less easily identifiable attributes in the development of competence, which became known as 'bricks and mortar'.
Discussion: Students felt that the most important factor affecting their preparation was clinical exposure. Outreach placements were felt to be particularly useful, the simulation of general dental practice being highly valued by final year students. The interaction with educators was also felt to be a key influence on preparedness, with the involvement of general practitioners in dental school teaching felt to be helpful, perhaps giving students an extended exposure to general practice.
Conclusion: It is hoped that the rich data derived from this study may allow an invaluable insight into factors contributing to preparedness of new dental graduates, which may then be considered in the light of any proposed changes in the curricula or syllabi.

Background: This study aimed to create a comprehensive Core Outcome Set (COS) for assessing the long-term outcome (≥ 5 years) after Metabolic Bariatric Surgery (MBS), through the use of the Delphi method.
Methods: The study utilized a three-phase approach. In Phase 1, a long list of items was identified through a literature review and expert input, forming the basis for an online Delphi survey.

Background: Sex has been associated with different pathologic characteristics in painful hips undergoing hip arthroscopic surgery.
Purpose: To compare minimum 10-year patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and survivorship in patients who underwent primary hip arthroscopic surgery for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome and labral tears according to sex.
Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
We present the case of a 74-year-old female patient with a 50 mm ascending aortic aneurysm who underwent ascending aorta replacement. During routine open heart surgery, suboptimal flow in the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit, led to the discovery of a type B aortic dissection with substantial flow in the false lumen. Conservative management was chosen, focusing on blood pressure control in the ICU.

Background: As cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality increase yearly, this study aimed to explore the potential of the weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) and its relation to long-term mortality in patients with CVD.
Methods: The diagnosis of CVD was based on standardized medical condition questionnaires that incorporated participants' self-reported physician diagnoses. WWI (cm/√kg) is a continuous variable and calculated as waist circumference (WC, cm) divided by square root of body weight (kg).

Background: Temperature is a key determinant of ectotherms distribution and growth. During the Eriocheir sinensis breeding process, it was observed that crabs in high latitudes and altitude areas with low temperatures undergo diapause, they would overwinter and continue to grow into three-year-old individuals, whose final body size is significantly larger than the normal two-year-old crabs. The hepatopancreas is responsible for maintaining the nutritional balance and energy required for the crab survival.
