Unlabelled: The epithelium's functional unit is the bilayered acinus, made of a layer of luminal cells, surrounded by a layer of basal cells mainly composed of myoepithelial cells.
Aim: The aim of this study was to develop a reproducible and manipulable 3D co-culture model of the bilayered acinus to study the interactions between the two layers.
Materials & Methods: Two different combinations of cell lines were co-cultured in Matrigel: SCp2 and SCg6 mice cells, or MCF-12A and Hs 578Bst human cell lines.
Results: Confocal microscopy analysis showed that only MCF-12A and Hs 578Bst cells could form some bilayered acini. This bilayered acini model will allow us to understand the role of interactions between luminal and myoepithelial cells in the normal breast development.

The objective of this study was to describe the histological and histochemical characteristics of the lacrimal glands of beluga whales. The study was carried out on the formalin-fixed ocular globes from 96 carcasses of beluga whales found stranded in the St. Lawrence estuary in Quebec, Canada.

A 15-year-old old Japanese male with a 2-month history of swelling of his left subauricular area was admitted to our department. A thumb-sized, hard mass with mild tenderness was palpated on the left parotid gland. Ultrasonography revealed a well-circumscribed, hypoechoic mass exhibiting heterogeneity in the left parotid gland measuring 1.

The salivary epithelium initiates as a solid mass of epithelial cells that are organized into a primary bud that undergoes morphogenesis and differentiation to yield bilayered acini consisting of interior secretory acinar cells that are surrounded by contractile myoepithelial cells in mature salivary glands. How the primary bud transitions into acini has not been previously documented. We document here that the outer epithelial cells subsequently undergo a vertical compression as they express smooth muscle α-actin and differentiate into myoepithelial cells.

A significant challenge in oncology is the need to develop in vitro models that accurately mimic the complex microenvironment within and around normal and diseased tissues. Here, we describe a self-folding approach to create curved hydrogel microstructures that more accurately mimic the geometry of ducts and acini within the mammary glands, as compared to existing three-dimensional block-like models or flat dishes. The microstructures are composed of photopatterned bilayers of poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), a hydrogel widely used in tissue engineering.
