Three models (blocking laws, combined and resistance-in-series) were applied to identify the prevailing fouling mechanisms in a submerged membrane in an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor treating municipal wastewater. Experimental runs were carried out at lab-scale with filtration periods of 4 and 10 min, followed by relaxation periods of one minute with and without nitrogen bubbling. In all conditions excepting one (IF4R), the blocking laws model showed a predominance of cake formation. With the combined model, cake formation coupled with intermediate, standard and complete fouling had the better fits in all conditions, excepting IF4 and IF4R. When sewage was fed, both models pointed at intermediate fouling in the absence of gas bubbling. The resistance-in-series model identified the positive effect of gas bubbling and a post-cake fouling behavior, not shown by the other two models. This modeling approach could be applied for achieving longer filtration runs in submerged UF membranes.

Integrated MFC-MBR systems effectively remove antibiotics and control the release of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, the fouling layers on membranes can potentially act as reservoirs for ARGs. This study aims to elucidate the roles of membrane fouling layers and levels in influencing sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal and ARGs control within an MFC-MBR system.

platforms capable of mimicking the hydrodynamic conditions prevailing in natural aquatic environments have been previously validated and used to predict the fouling behavior on different surfaces. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been used to predict the shear forces occurring in these platforms. In general, these predictions are made for the initial stages of biofilm formation, where the amount of biofilm does not affect the flow behavior, enabling the estimation of the shear forces that initial adhering organisms have to withstand.

Introduction: Continuous renal replacement therapies (CRRTs) require constant monitoring and periodic treatment readjustments, being applied to highly complex patients, with rapidly changing clinical needs. To promote precision medicine in the field of renal replacement therapy and encourage dynamic prescription, the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI) recommends periodically measuring the solutes extracorporeal clearance with the aim of assessing the current treatment delivery and the gap from the therapeutic prescription (often intended as effluent dose). To perform this procedure, it is therefore necessary to obtain blood and effluent samples from the extracorporeal circuit to measure the concentrations of a target solute (usually represented by urea) in prefilter, postfilter, and effluent lines.

This paper presents an analysis of the fouling of a ceramic membrane by a mixture containing high concentrations of humic acid and colloidal silica during cross-flow ultrafiltration under various operating conditions. Two types of feed water were tested: feed water containing humic acid and feed water containing a mixture of humic acid and colloidal silica. The colloidal silica exacerbated the fouling, yielding lower fluxes (109-394 L m h) compared to the humic acid feed water (205-850 L m h), while the retentions were higher except for the highest cross-flow rate.

The effect of gap thickness reduction 2h (i.e., the reduction h at each membrane surface) is studied on the flow field and mass transfer, in membrane channels filled with novel spacers, under conditions representative of those prevailing in RO desalination modules.
