Background: Various explicit screening tools, developed mostly in central Europe and the USA, assist clinicians in optimizing medication use for older adults. The Turkish Inappropriate Medication use in oldEr adults (TIME) criteria set, primarily based on the STOPP/START criteria set, is a current explicit tool originally developed for Eastern Europe and subsequently validated for broader use in Central European settings. Reviewed every three months to align with the latest scientific literature, it is one of the most up-to-date tools available.

Background: People who identify as sexual- and/or gender-minoritized (SGM) individuals have high prevalence of cigarette smoking. This study used concept mapping to examine anticipated reactions to a hypothetical cigarette nicotine reduction policy among SGM individuals in the United States.

Methods: In 2022, SGM individuals who reported past-month cigarette smoking (mean age=33.

Predictive Model for Opioid Use Disorder in Chronic Pain: A Development and Validation Study.

Biomedicines

September 2024

Pharmacogenetics Unit, Clinical Pharmacology Department, Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL), Diagnostic Center, Gray Building, 5th Floor, Avda Pintor Baeza, 12, 03010 Alicante, Spain.

Background/objective: There are several questionnaires for the challenge of anticipating opioid use disorder (OUD). However, many are not specific for chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) or have been developed in the American population, whose sociodemographic factors are very different from the Spanish population, leading to scarce translation into clinical practice. Thus, the aim of this study is to prospectively validate a predictive model for OUD in Spanish patients under long-term opioids.

When exposed to a predictable external perturbation, humans typically generate anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) to minimize potential body disturbance. After a single session of training, individuals demonstrated the ability to rely solely on an auditory cue to elicit appropriate APAs in response to an external postural perturbation. However, whether the generation of APAs requires directional specific training remains unclear.

Use of the threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) approach as an alternative tool for regulatory purposes: A case study with an inert ingredient used in pesticide products.

Chemosphere

September 2024

United States Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Pesticide Programs, 1200 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington D.C., 20460, USA. Electronic address:

This study investigates the potential of the Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC) as an alternative to traditional animal testing in pesticide regulatory risk assessments. The TTC is a principle that establishes exposure threshold values for chemicals with certain structural features, below which there is no appreciable risk to human health. A case study was conducted with α-terpineol, an inert ingredient proposed to be used at low concentrations in pesticide products, to compare a conventional risk assessment using animal data with one using the TTC method.
