A series of Pt nanoparticles (with size of 3-4 nm) decorated CdS nanorods were prepared via a simple solvothermal method. The samples were then used for photocatalytic selective oxidation (SO) of aromatic alcohols and reduction (SR) of nitroarenes in one reaction system. The platinized samples showed enhanced activity for the conversions than pristine CdS as Pt can serve as e trapping and reaction sites, by which the recombination of photoinduced charge carriers can be suppressed and the adsorption of reactants and the SR of nitroarenes can be promoted. The sample loaded with only of 0.03% Pt showed the highest performance and, after irradiation for 4 h, the conversions of p-methoxybenzyl alcohol and nitrobenzene are as high as 92.7% and 94.8%, while the yields of p-methoxybenzaldehyde and aniline are 80.5% and 36.0%. The activities are about 2.0 times higher than that of CdS. The coupling reaction mechanism for the SO of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes and SR of nitroarenes to anilines in the reaction system was finally proposed.

The thermocatalytic conversion of CO with green or blue hydrogen into valuable energy and commodity chemicals such as alcohols, olefins, and aromatics emerges as one of the most promising strategies for mitigating global warming concerns in the future. This process can follow either a CO-modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis route or a methanol-mediated route, with the latter being favored for its high product selectivity beyond the Anderson-Schulz-Flory distribution. Despite the progress of the CO-led methanol-mediated route over bifunctional metal/zeolite catalysts, challenges persist in developing catalysts with both high activity and selectivity due to the complexity of CO hydrogenation reaction networks and the difficulty in controlling C-O bond activation and C-C bond coupling on multiple active sites within zeolites.

Constructing highly conjugated three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs), particularly those with luminescent features, remains a significant challenge. In this work, we successfully synthesized a 3D COF, named 3D-Py-SP-COF, using a rigid and orthogonal spirobifluorene building block for the spatial 3D structure construction and planar pyrene as luminescent units. The incorporation of the pyrene and the unique rigid 3D network structure endow 3D-Py-SP-COF with fluorescent properties.

Geraniol is an acyclic monoterpene alcohol that is extracted from the essential oils of aromatic plants. Geraniol has several biological activities such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective effects. However, the pharmacokinetics of geraniol and its metabolites after oral administration remain unknown in mice.

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) have recently been recognized as an emerging sector of metal nanomaterials but suffer from light-induced poor stability, giving rise to the detrimental self-transformation into metal nanocrystals (NYs), losing the photosensitization effect and ultimately retarding their widespread applications in photoredox catalysis. Are metal NCs definitely superior to metal NYs in heterogeneous photocatalysis in terms of structural merits? To unlock this mystery, herein, we conceptually demonstrate how to rationally manipulate the instability of metal NCs to construct high-efficiency artificial photosystems and examine how the metal NYs self-transformed from metal NCs influence charge transfer in photoredox selective organic transformation. To our surprise, the results indicate that the Schottky-type electron-trapping ability of Au NYs surpasses the photosensitization effect of glutathione (GSH)-protected Au clusters [Au(GSH) NCs] in mediating charge separation and enhancing photoactivities towards selective photoreduction of aromatic nitro compounds to amino derivatives and photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes under visible light irradiation.
