Landfilling is common in developing countries since it is the easiest and cheapest way of waste disposal, however, it leads to serious environmental problems such as soil, water, and air pollution. A landfill has a life span of fifteen years after which it is closed leaving the site unusable, as a result, effective methods are needed for restoring and reclaiming the closed landfill site for future use. Phytoremediation has emerged as a viable and environmentally friendly method, which uses green plants to remove pollutants from soil, air, and water.

Enhancement of alfalfa growth resistance by arbuscular mycorrhiza and earthworm in molybdenum-contaminated soils: From the perspective of soil nutrient turnover.

Molybdenum (Mo) acts as a crucial nutrient for plant development, yet excessive soil exposure can cause detrimental effects. Molybdenosis symptoms remain subtle in many plants, largely due to the safeguarding functions of soil organisms, the fundamental biological mechanisms lack clarity. In this study, we explored the potential mechanisms for amending Mo-exposed soils with soil microbe-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and soil fauna, specifically earthworms, to enhance model plant-alfalfa growth resistance through soil nutrient turnover perspectives.

The ongoing weathering of metal sulfides has substantially posed threats to the eco-systems. For remediating metal sulfides-contaminated soils, phytostabilization is a promising nature-based technique that immobilizing heavy metals (HMs) that dissolved from metal sulfides in the rhizosphere, preventing their leaching and migrating into soil and groundwater. However, the underlying mechanism regarding the mineral-root interaction involving primary metal sulfides such as galena (PbS) during the remediation processes has yet been well studied.

How to develop nature-based solutions for revegetation on abandoned farmland in the Loess Plateau of China?

J Environ Manage

December 2024

CSIC, Global Ecology Unit CREAF-CSIC-UAB, Bellaterra, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain; CREAF, Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.

Adequate revegetation of abandoned farmland acts as a defence against desertification and soil loss, and can help remove carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, thereby playing an important role in regulating regional climate change. Legume, a nitrogen-fixation species, which could effectively improve vegetation coverage to control soil erosion, was widely used for revegetation. However, the dynamics of soil and plant development after legume introduction on abandoned farmland remain unclear.

Identification of GiOMT gene family in Glycyrrhiza inflata bat and expression analysis under UV-B stresses.

BMC Genomics

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Aridland Crop Science/Agronomy College, Gansu Agricultural University, Lanzhou, 730070, China.

Background: O-Methyltransferase (OMTs) is a class of conserved multifunctional enzymes that play important roles in plant developmental regulation, hormone signaling, secondary metabolite synthesis and abiotic stress response. The GiOMT gene family has been identified and analyzed in species such as citrus, alfalfa, Populus and grape, but has not been reported in Glycyrrhiza inflata Bat.

Results: In this study, we systematically identified and analyzed the GiOMT gene family of G.
