Rapid urbanization has significantly altered surface landscape configurations, leading to complex urban climates. While much attention has been focused on impervious surfaces' impact on extreme precipitation, a critical gap remains in understanding how various 2D urban landscape components influence extreme precipitation across different durations. Through an analysis of the non-stationarity and spatiotemporal variations in extreme precipitation across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) from 1990 to 2020, we constructed the non-stationary Generalized Additive Models for Location Scale and Shape (GAMLSS) model by introducing six urban landscape structural metrics as explanatory variables for each of the 27 meteorological stations in the GBA.

The relation between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and circadian rhythm disturbance has been increasingly acknowledged in recent years. While prior clinical studies have utilized patients' self-reported sleep behaviors, there is a need to also explore the measurable, biological aspects of circadian rhythms. The current study has two aims: first, to describe the biological circadian rhythms of individuals with OCD seeking intensive residential treatment, including their relationship with self-reported measures of sleep and OCD symptoms; and second, to examine longitudinal associations between biological circadian rhythms and OCD symptom severity during the course of residential treatment.

Prolonged incubation time unwarranted for acute periprosthetic joint infections.

J Clin Microbiol

January 2025

Department of Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Infection Prevention, Maastricht University Medical Centre, Maastricht, the Netherlands.

Unlabelled: Current laboratory protocols for periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) involve a standard 10- to 14-day incubation period. However, recent evidence indicates considerable variability in the time to diagnosis (TTD) between acute and chronic PJIs. TTD is also influenced by the employed culture media and sample types.

PICC Lines in Pregnancy and Other Peripartum Vascular Access Considerations.

Obstet Gynecol Surv

January 2025

Professor, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, NC.

Importance: To decrease associated infectious and thrombotic morbidity, it is important to understand the indications and risks of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) and other vascular access means in pregnancy.

Objectives: The objectives are 3-fold: (1) discuss indications and contraindications, approach to placement, and associated complications for PICC lines, arterial catheters, centrally inserted central catheters, and peripheral intravenous catheters; (2) review available data regarding complications associated with these catheters in pregnancy; and (3) propose an evidence-based approach to clinical decision making regarding vascular access in 2 clinical scenarios among pregnant patients.

Evidence Acquisition: A literature review identified relevant research, review articles, textbook chapters, databases, and societal guidelines, with a focus on obstetrical anesthesia and obstetric literature.
