Methemoglobinemia Induced By Ingesting Lava Lamp Contents.

Clin Pract Cases Emerg Med

Duke University, Department of Emergency Medicine, Durham, North Carolina.

Published: August 2018

A patient presented after ingesting the contents of a lava lamp that he believed to contain alcohol. It was later discovered that this product was comprised of 76% calcium nitrate, leading to his subsequent development of methemoglobinemia. This disease is a medical emergency secondary to poor transportation of oxygen and resultant tissue hypoxic effects. Therefore, having high suspicion for this disease process in patients with toxic ingestions, understanding the proper diagnosis, and promptly starting treatment are all critical actions for emergency physicians.

Exploring the impact of tertiary lymphoid structures maturity in NSCLC: insights from TLS scoring.

Front Immunol

October 2024

Translational Medicine, Oncology R&D, AstraZeneca, Cambridge, United Kingdom.

Article Synopsis
  • Tertiary Lymphoid Structures (TLS) are linked to better cancer patient survival and responses to immunotherapies, but their effectiveness can vary based on size, composition, and maturation.
  • A study on Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (NSCLC) used a multiplex immunofluorescent panel to analyze tumor samples from 406 patients, focusing on specific immune cell types within TLS.
  • The analysis led to a TLS scoring system that identified key features predictive of patient outcomes, showing correlations with other cancer biomarkers but not with PD-L1 status.

Immunofluorescence is an important research tool in cell biology that reveals structural organization of subcellular organelles by detecting their associated constituents. Here, we describe an antibody staining method to detect Golgi-associated proteins in Drosophila larval salivary glands, using the cis-Golgi protein Lava lamp and the clathrin adaptor AP-1 as a suitable example. Golgi bodies immunostained using this protocol can be visualized using confocal or structured illumination microscopy.

An elderly patient with progressive dementia presented with nonspecific symptoms of fatigue, skin discoloration, shortness of breath, and altered mental status. She quickly developed respiratory failure requiring emergent endotracheal intubation. Initial laboratory results revealed methemoglobinemia levels greater than 30% with blood appearing black in hue.

During spermatogenesis, the Golgi apparatus serves important roles including the formation of the acrosome, which is a sperm-specific organelle essential for fertilization. We have previously demonstrated that ATP-dependent Citrate Lyase (ATPCL) is required for spindle organization, cytokinesis, and fusome assembly during male meiosis, mainly due to is activity on fatty acid biosynthesis. Here, we show that depletion of also affects the organization of acrosome and suggest a role for this enzyme in the assembly of Golgi-derived structures during Drosophila spermatogenesis.
