Recently, the major professional societies in Radiology have embarked upon a campaign to increase the patient-centeredness of Radiology. At the foundation of this initiative is direct communication between radiologist and patient, an area that has long been a deficiency for the field. Historically, there have been a number of barriers to effective radiologist-patient communication including logistical challenges, a negative impact on efficiency, and uncertainty of the role of the radiologist in discussing results with patients. The ubiquity of the internet and the wealth of applications that allow the safe transmission of robust information provide a number of opportunities for the radiologist. The purpose of this article is to review key web-based platforms that can improve communication, highlight unique initiatives being employed by thought leaders, and emphasize why radiologist-patient communication is paramount to the patient centered imaging experience.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare patient satisfaction and anxiety levels among women undergoing core-needle breast biopsies on the same day vs. a later date, analyzing responses from 974 participants over a 16-month period.
  • Findings showed that same-day biopsies led to significantly higher satisfaction with the overall breast-care experience and wait times, but also resulted in greater anxiety both before and after the procedure.
  • The analysis indicated that effective communication with radiologists reduced prebiopsy anxiety, while certain demographic differences, particularly among Black women, revealed patterns of lower prebiopsy satisfaction and varying postbiopsy anxiety levels.

AI has shown radiologist-level performance at diagnosis and detection of breast cancer from breast imaging such as ultrasound and mammography. Integration of AI-enhanced breast imaging into a radiologist's workflow through the use of computer-aided diagnosis systems, may affect the relationship they maintain with their patient. This raises ethical questions about the maintenance of the radiologist-patient relationship and the achievement of the ethical ideal of shared decision-making (SDM) in breast imaging.

Managing Challenging Patient Interactions in Breast Imaging.

J Breast Imaging

April 2022

Elizabeth Wende Breast Care, Rochester, NY, USA.

Managing challenging patient interactions can be a daily stressor for breast imaging radiologists, leading to burnout. This article offers communication and behavioral practices for radiologists that help reduce radiologists' stress during these encounters. Patient scenarios viewed as difficult can vary among radiologists.

The Patient Advisory Group (PAG) of the European Society of Radiology aims to highlight, in this short paper, patients' expectations from the radiological community and support workers, throughout the patient's medical imaging journey for completion of diagnostic or interventional examinations. In order to maintain constant awareness of patients' expectations, key expectations have been summarised in an easy-to-remember mnemonic: PATIENTS CARERS AIMS.Due to disparate healthcare systems and medical imaging services in Europe, not all patient expectations can be systematically met, but healthcare providers should be mindful, when setting up new operational procedures, of the need to focus on patient-centred needs and care.

Background: Patient centered radiology represents a crucial aspect for modern sustainable radiology. The definition of patient-centered consists of a focus on patients' individual values and wishes with a respectful integration in medical decisions. In this narrative review we try to give a practical introduction into this complex topic with the extension to a person-centered radiology, which additionally encompasses values and wishes of radiological and other medical colleagues.
