Background: The prognostic impact of hyperglycemia (HG) in acute heart failure (AHF) is controversial. Our aim is to examine the impact of HG on short- and long-term survival in AHF patients.

Methods: Data from the Heart Function Assessment Registry Trial in Saudi Arabia (HEARTS) for patients who had available random blood sugar (RBS) were analyzed. The enrollment period was from October 2009 to December 2010. Comparisons were performed according to the RBS levels on admission as either <11.1 mmol/L or ≥11.1 mmol/L. Primary outcomes were hospital adverse events and short- and long-term mortality rates.

Results: A total of 2511 patients were analyzed. Of those, 728 (29%) had HG. Compared to non-HG patients, hyperglycemics had higher rates of hospital, 30-day, and 1-year mortality rates (8.8% vs. 5.6%;  = 0.003, 10.4% vs. 7.2%;  = 0.007, and 21.8% vs. 18.4%;  = 0.04, respectively). There were no differences between the two groups in 2- or 3-year mortality rates. After adjustment for relevant confounders, HG remained an independent predictor for hospital and 30-day mortality [odds ratio (OR) = 1.6; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.07-2.42;  = 0.021, and OR = 1.55; 95% CI 1.07-2.25;  = 0.02, respectively].

Conclusion: HG on admission is independently associated with hospital and short-term mortality in AHF patients. Future research should focus on examining the impact of tight glycemic control on outcomes of AHF patients.

In this study, we investigated the effect of severe dysphagia on the overall survival of patients who underwent PEG. A cohort of patients who underwent PEG between April 2016 and April 2021 was retrospectively analyzed. The Hyodo-Komagane score was used to evaluate swallowing via endoscopy.

Objective: To analyze the impact of tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) maintenance therapy following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in patients with Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph + ALL) on recurrence rates and prognosis for the 2 transcripts, p190 and p210.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of clinical data from 58 patients diagnosed with Ph + ALL who underwent HSCT. All patients received TKI maintenance therapy following hematopoietic reconstruction post-transplantation.

Identifying predictive markers for survival in malignant biliary obstruction following percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage.

University Hospital Southampton, Southampton General Hospital, Tremona Road, Southampton, Hampshire, SO16 6YD, UK. Electronic address:

Aim: Malignant biliary obstructive disease is commonly managed with percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD). Traditionally, outcomes are evaluated collectively despite substantial variability in the underlying aetiology and extent of disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether variability in survival could be explained by different underlying patient and disease factors.

Programmed cell death (PCD) is a significant factor in the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and might serve as a crucial marker for predicting HCC prognosis and therapy response. However, the classification of HCC based on diverse PCD patterns requires further investigation. This study identified a novel molecular classification named PCD subtype (C1, C2, and C3) based on the genes associated with 19 PCD patterns, distinguished by clinical, biological functional pathways, mutations, immune characteristics, and drug sensitivity.

We explored the influence of the TCL6/miR-876-5p axis on breast cancer cell proliferation and migration. Using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, we evaluated the expression of TCL6 in breast cancer patients and studied its effects on cell proliferation, migration, and the cell cycle in vitro. The regulatory effect of miR-876-5p on myosin light chain-2 (MYL2) 3' untranslated regions (3'UTR) was analyzed through luciferase reporter assays, and rescue experiments confirmed TCL6-driven upregulation of MYL2 via a competitive RNA binding mechanism.
