In this paper, we present the non-orthogonal configuration interaction singles (NOCIS) method for calculating core-excited states of closed-shell molecules. NOCIS is a black-box variant of NOCI, which uses A different core-ionized determinants for a molecule with A atoms of a given element to form single substitutions. NOCIS is a variational, spin-pure, size-consistent ab initio method that dramatically improves on standard CIS by capturing essential orbital relaxation effects, in addition to essential configuration interaction. We apply it to the calculation of core-excitations for several smaller molecules and demonstrate that it performs competitively with other Hartree-Fock and DFT-based methods. We also benchmark it in several basis sets.

The Orange Carotenoid Protein (OCP) is a unique water-soluble photoactive protein that plays a critical role in regulating the balance between light harvesting and photoprotective responses in cyanobacteria. The challenge in understanding OCP´s photoactivation mechanism stems from the heterogeneity of the initial configurations of its embedded ketocarotenoid, which in the dark-adapted state can form up to two hydrogen bonds to critical amino acids in the protein's C-terminal domain, and the extremely low quantum yield of primary photoproduct formation. While a series of experiments involving point mutations within these contacts helped us to identify these challenges, they did not resolve them.

This study explores the preparation of lubricating oleo-dispersions using electrospun nanofibrous mats made from low-sulfonate lignin (LSL) and polycaprolactone (PCL). The rheological and tribological properties of the oleo-dispersions were significantly modulated for the first time through the exploration of LSL/PCL ratio and electrospinning conditions such as applied voltage, distance between the tip and collector, flow rate, ambient humidity, and collector configuration. Adequate uniform ultrathin fibers and Small-amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) functions of the oleo-dispersions, with storage modulus values ranging from 10 to 10 Pa at 25 °C, were obtained with a flow rate of 0.

This article presents data derived from a series of experiments conducted on a scaled model ship, examining its performance in both calm water and regular waves. The acquisition of high-quality experimental data is essential for refining Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and modifying analytical methods to evaluate the powering performance of ships. Despite notable advancements in numerical models, there exists a corresponding imperative to elevate the precision of measurements and insights obtained from towing tank tests.

This work describes the development of the first enantioselective addition reaction between 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-BODIPYs and isatin derivatives. The reaction utilizes bifunctional quinine/squaramide organocatalysts and affords nine novel chiral BODIPY dyes under mild conditions, with enantioselectivities reaching up to 60%. The synthesized BODIPY-oxindoles exhibit high fluorescence emissions, consistent with their parent BODIPYs, and display tunable colors.
