This study tested the hypothesis that individuals with dyscalculia have an order processing deficit. The ordering measures included both numerical and non-numerical ordering tasks, and ordering of both familiar and novel sequences was assessed. Magnitude processing/estimation tasks and measures of inhibition skills were also administered. The participants were 20 children with developmental dyscalculia, and 20 children without maths difficulties. The two groups were closely matched on age, gender, socio-economic status, educational experiences, IQ and reading ability. The findings revealed differences between the groups in both ordering and magnitude processing skills. Nevertheless, diagnostic status was best predicted by order processing abilities.

Concentrations of pollutants like pharmaceuticals in soils typically decrease over time, though it often remains unclear whether this dissipation is caused by the transformation of the pollutant or a decreasing extractability. We developed a mathematical model that (1) explores the plausibility of different dissipation pathways, and (2) allows the quantification of concentration differences between aqueous soil extracts and soil solution. The model considers soil particles as uniform spheres, kinetic sorption towards an equilibrium (Freundlich model), and two dissipation pathways, irreversible transformation and mineralization (following 1 order kinetics) as well as the formation of non-extractable residues intraparticle diffusion.

Crystallization in load-controlled shearing flows of monosized spheres.

Soft Matter

January 2025

Politecnico di Milano, 20133 Milano, Italy.

Identical, inelastic spheres crystallize when sheared between two parallel, bumpy planes under a constant load larger than a minimum value. We investigate the effect of the inter-particle friction coefficient of the sheared particles on the flow dynamics and the crystallization process with discrete element simulations. If the imposed load is about the minimum value to observe crystallization in frictionless spheres, adding small friction to the granular assembly results in a shear band adjacent to one of the planes and one crystallized region, where a plug flow is observed.

Synchronization stability of epileptic brain network with higher-order interactions.

Chaos

January 2025

Beijing Institute of Functional Neurosurgery, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing 100053, China.

Generally, epilepsy is considered as abnormally enhanced neuronal excitability and synchronization. So far, previous studies on the synchronization of epileptic brain networks mainly focused on the synchronization strength, but the synchronization stability has not yet been explored as deserved. In this paper, we propose a novel idea to construct a hypergraph brain network (HGBN) based on phase synchronization.

Paddlewheel-type and half-paddlewheel-type diruthenium(II,II) complexes with 1,8-naphthyridine-2-carboxylate.

Paddlewheel-type diruthenium(II,II) complexes are paramagnetic with two unpaired electrons ( = 1) and can be utilized as versatile building blocks for higher-order structures, such as supramolecular complexes, coordination polymers, and metal-organic frameworks, although they are generally highly air-sensitive. In this study, we developed an air-stable paddlewheel-type diruthenium(II,II) complex with two electron-withdrawing 1,8-naphthyridine-2-carboxylate (npc) ligands, [Ru(μ-npc)(OCMe)] (1). The two acetate ligands in 1 can be replaced by other carboxylate ligands; the solvothermal reactions of 1 with benzoic acid (HOCPh) yields the heteroleptic [Ru(μ-npc)(OCPh)] (2), whereas its reaction with 1,8-naphthyridine-2-carboxylic acid (Hnpc) produces the homoleptic [Ru(μ-npc)(η-npc)] (3).

The rapid development of China's economy and the acceleration of the urbanization process have led to a significant increase in carbon emissions, and more effective policies are urgently needed. As the first city in China to be approved for the overall master plan of territorial space, Chongqing is facing new opportunities in urban construction. This research constructed a classification system of the territorial space functional areas in Chongqing (CQ-TSFA) and matched the corresponding carbon emission and carbon sequestration projects.
