A long-detection interval (LDI) programming has been proved to reduce shock therapy in patients who underwent implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation. We aimed to evaluate effectiveness and safety of this new strategy in old ICD recipients. We included 147 primary prevention patients with ischaemic and non-ischaemic aetiology. Conventional setting parameters (18 of 24 intervals to detect ventricular arrhythmias (VA's)) were reprogrammed with LDI strategy (30 of 40 intervals to detect VA's). One monitoring zone (between 360 and 330 ms) and two therapy zones were programmed, treating all rhythms of cycle length <330 ms that met the duration criterion of 30/40 intervals and were discriminated as ventricular tachycardia/ventricular fibrillation (VT/VF). The supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) discriminators were used in all patients. At a median follow-up of 24 months, 12.9% ( = 19) of patients received shock therapies (± antitachycardia pacing (ATP)). Appropriate and inappropriate shocks occurred in 7.5 and 5.4% of patients during follow-up, respectively. Only one patient experienced an arrhythmic syncope during the follow-up period. There was no death related to LDI programming. The LDI programming helped to stop unnecessary in 10 patients (6.8%), who otherwise would have been treated in the conventional programming. LDI programming was found safe and effective. Hence, old ICD recipients will benefit from this strategy.

Background: Type A aortic dissection (TAAD) remains a significant challenge in cardiac surgery, presenting high risks of adverse outcomes such as permanent neurological dysfunction and mortality despite advances in medical technology and surgical techniques. This study investigates the use of quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) to monitor and predict neurological outcomes during the perioperative period in TAAD patients.

Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted at the hospital, involving patients undergoing TAAD surgery from February 2022 to January 2023.

Fañanas cells (FCs) are cerebellar glia of unknown function. First described more than a century ago, they have been almost absent from the scientific literature ever since. Here, we combined whole-cell, patch clamp recordings, near-UV laser photolysis, dye-loading and confocal imaging for a first characterization of FCs in terms of their morphology, electrophysiology and glutamate-evoked currents.

Background: Steatotic liver disease (SLD) is a potentially reversible condition but often goes unnoticed with the risk for end-stage liver disease.

Purpose: To opportunistically estimate SLD on lung screening chest computed tomography (CT) and investigate its prognostic value in heavy smokers participating in the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST).

Material And Methods: We used a deep learning model to segment the liver on non-contrast-enhanced chest CT scans of 19,774 NLST participants (age 61.

Purpose: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive brain tumor. This meta-analysis investigates the association between HOTAIR expression levels and GBM.

Methods: We searched the literature for studies on HOTAIR expression in GBM patients.

Infections with bacteria of the genus Pasteurella have increased in occurrence in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) farms in Norway since 2018. This increase coincides with increased use of non-medicinal treatments against the parasitic salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, in the farms. Here, we analysed the statistical association between the use of non-medicinal delousing methods and pasteurellosis in salmon farming in western Norway, from 2018 to 2023.
