Acquired pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is an uncommon occurrence in adults, but one that carries significant morbidity/mortality. PVS can be secondary to neoplastic infiltration/extrinsic compression, non-neoplastic infiltration/extrinsic compression, or iatrogenic intervention. This article: (I) reviews the common causes of acquired PVS; (II) illustrates direct and indirect cross-sectional imaging findings in acquired PVS (in order to avoid misinterpretation of these imaging findings); and (III) details the role of imaging before and after the treatment of acquired PVS.

Neuroinflammation modifies the relationship between stress and perivascular spaces in an elderly population with different levels of cognitive impairment.

Front Cell Neurosci

November 2024

Laboratory of Neuro Imaging, USC Mark and Mary Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, United States.

Background: Perivascular spaces (PVS) are fluid-filled spaces surrounding the brain parenchymal vasculature. Literature suggests that PVS may play a significant role in aging and neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of this study is to investigate whether the relationship between MRI-visible PVS and stress is influenced by neuroinflammation in an elderly population with different levels of cognitive impairment.

Current views on the role of HIF-2α in the pathogenesis and syndromic presentation of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma.

Article Synopsis
  • - Pathogenic variants (PVs) in the EPAS1 gene, which influences the hypoxia-inducible factor HIF-2α, are linked to about 3%-6% of pheochromocytoma and paragangliomas (PPGLs), either as standalone tumors or as part of Pacak-Zhuang Syndrome (PZS) which may include additional symptoms like polycythemia and somatostatinoma.
  • - The mutations in EPAS1 allow HIF-2α to escape from degradation processes, leading to its accumulation and activation of genes that promote tumor formation, particularly in those diagnosed in their second or third decade of life, with a higher prevalence in females.
  • - Research into the hyp

Background: The quantitative interpretation of the radiometric information extracted from infrared (IR) images in individuals with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is an open problem yet to be solved. This is of particular value given that DM2 is a worldwide health problem and onset for evolution toward diabetic foot disease (DFD). Since DM2 causes changes at the vascular and neurological levels, the metabolic heat distribution on the outer skin is modified as a consequence of such alterations.

Development and validation of a perivascular space segmentation method in multi-center datasets.

Neuroimage

September 2024

Department of Radiology, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Perivascular spaces (PVS) visible on MRI are linked to neurological diseases, but a standardized method for analyzing these spaces across different studies is lacking.
  • A new neural network called mcPVS-Net was developed to accurately segment PVS from multi-center MRI images, achieving high accuracy and consistency across different scanner brands.
  • The study found strong correlations between PVS volumes and factors like age and hypertension, with PVS volumes varying significantly based on visual scores related to neurological health.

Virological evaluation was performed on equine semen to detect the presence of papillomaviruses (PVs) using droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) as the aim of this study was to investigate whether the sperm from asymptomatic stallions harbors ovine papillomaviruses (OaPVs). Twenty-seven semen samples were analyzed, 18 of which were commercially acquired. The remaining nine samples comprising semen and peripheral blood, were collected from nine stallions with no apparent signs of PV-related diseases during clinical examination at the Didactic Veterinary University Hospital (DVUH) of Naples.
