There is great concern about decreasing the amounts of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) that are formed and emitted during the chlorine bleaching of pulp. The formation of PCDD/Fs during non-woodpulp chlorine bleaching was investigated in the study described here. Wheat straw was separated into three components, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Chlorination experiments were performed, and lignin and hemicellulose contributed more than cellulose to PCDD/F formation when the pulp was bleached using chlorine. The chemical components of lignin were identified by gas chromatography mass spectrometry, and nine possible PCDD/F precursors were quantified by gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Spiked chlorination experiments were performed to investigate the effects of these compounds on PCDD/F formation. 4-Ethyl-2-methoxyphenol had the strongest effect on PCDD/F formation, followed by p-chlorophenol, and guaiacol. All the test compounds promoted polychlorinated dibenzofuran formation but had limited effects on polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin formation. The results allowed mechanisms for the formation of PCDD/Fs from phenol, chlorophenol, catechol, and guaiacol to be proposed.

During use of sodium hypochlorite bleach, gas-phase hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and chlorine (Cl) are released, which can react with organic compounds present in indoor air. In the indoor environment, occupants are exposed to air pollutants originating from continuous indoor sources and exchange with the outdoor air, with the highest concentration episodes dominated by activities performed indoors such as cooking and cleaning. Here we use the INdoor CHEMical model in Python (INCHEM-Py) constrained by measurements from the House Observations of Microbial and Environmental Chemistry (HOMEChem) campaign, to investigate the impact of a bleach cleaning event and cooking on indoor air chemistry. Measurements of the concentrations of longer-lived organic and inorganic compounds, as well as measured photolysis rates, have been used as input for the model, and the modelled hydroxyl (OH) radicals, hydroperoxyl radicals, and nitrous acid (HONO) concentrations compared to the measured values.

Background: Hospital wastewater systems have been identified as reservoirs for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, with biofilms harbouring extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing micro-organisms posing significant infection risk.
Aim: To study the antimicrobial susceptibility and biofilm control of ESBL-producing bacteria from wastewater pipes from a tertiary care teaching hospital in Ireland, which had experienced endemic infection outbreaks caused by ESBL-producing bacteria.
Methods: Following isolation of ESBL producers on selective agar, antibiotic susceptibility profiles were determined for a number of antibiotics assessed for their ability to form biofilms.
