Obesity and dementia are both associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and underlying neurodegenerative changes. Review articles provide evidential support that obesity and dementia result in an early old-age memory crisis. Obesity triggering vascular dementia decreases not only blood supply to the brain, but also increases fat cells that damage the brain white matter leading to loss of cognitive and intellectual behaviour. Adipocyte-secreted proteins and inflammatory cytokines explain the association between obesity and increased risk of dementia. Late-life elevated body mass index (BMI) confers a lower risk of having dementia. The hormone leptin explained the mechanism for the reverse association. Future studies need to reveal the linkage between adiposity and excess risk of dementia and AD.

Dementia is one of the fastest emerging global public health concerns today, as the World Health Organisation has predicted that the number of cases will triple from 55 million in 2023 to 152 million by 2050. Current evidence indicates that approximately 45% of dementia cases can be prevented or delayed by acting on potentially modifiable risk factors. However, public knowledge regarding this remains unknown in numerous poorly resourced countries, including Nepal, where the prevalence of dementia continues to increase.

Introduction: This study investigated the association between modifiable factors and symptom progression in dementia over up to 8 years.
Methods: Multilevel growth curve models assessed the role of modifiable risk factors (low education, hearing impairment and its treatment, depression, physical inactivity, diabetes and its treatment, smoking, hypertension and its treatment, obesity, alcohol consumption, social isolation, and visual impairment) on cognitive and functional trajectories in 353 people with dementia.
Results: Higher education was associated with higher initial cognitive status but faster decline.

Background: Little is known about the population of Medicare beneficiaries with both chronic kidney disease (CKD) and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD).
Methods: Using data from Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) beneficiaries aged 65 and over identified through 2011-2019 Master Beneficiary Summary File (MBSF), we estimated the size, growth, and racial-ethnic characteristics of the ADRD and CKD populations. Individuals were classified as having ADRD and CKD based on CMS Chronic Conditions Data Warehouse (CCW) indicators in the MBSF Chronic Conditions file.
