The pathogenesis of pediatric rheumatologic conditions varies with the specific disorder; however, certain commonalities are seen: altered migration of cells into tissues, production of inflammatory mediators, and enhanced activation of cells. Autoantibodies signal loss of tolerance and B and T cells may be seen on pathologic evaluation. Neutrophils are commonly observed in tissues for many diseases and are recruited through the activation of endothelial cells. These cellular infiltrates define the inflammatory response character and in some cases provide a therapeutic framework. Increased knowledge of the interactions of these cells and their products allow targeted treatments for rheumatic diseases.

Background And Objectives: The most effective antiseizure medications (ASMs) for poststroke seizures (PSSs) remain unclear. We aimed to determine outcomes associated with ASMs in people with PSS.

Methods: We systematically searched electronic databases for studies on patients with PSS on ASMs.

Tubulin detyrosination shapes cytoskeletal architecture and virulence.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Maladies infectieuses et Vecteurs: Ecologie, Génétique, Evolution et Contrôle, University of Montpellier, CNRS, Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, Montpellier 34095, France.

Tubulin detyrosination has been implicated in various human disorders and is important for regulating microtubule dynamics. While in most organisms this modification is restricted to α-tubulin, in trypanosomatid parasites, it occurs on both α- and β-tubulin. Here, we show that in , a single vasohibin (LmVASH) enzyme is responsible for differential kinetics of α- and β-tubulin detyrosination.

Background: Access to adequate pain treatment is a fundamental right, yet international data suggest that a considerable number of children experience acute and persistent pain. Little is known about the occurrence of both acute and persistent pain in children. The incidence of persistent postoperative pain in children is an unexplored area but international studies suggest that many children experience long-term pain after surgery, with a major impact on daily life.

[Importance of genetics in pediatric nephrology].

Andes Pediatr

August 2023

Fundación Valle del Lili, Cali, Colombia.

Advances in the field of genetics and genomics have had a great impact on the clinical practice of the pediatric nephrologist. Access to diagnostic genetic studies for renal pathologies allows not only to confirm specific diagnoses, but also to provide management and follow-up strategies, knowledge about prognosis, and prevention of complications. In addition, it provides genetic counseling to the patient and family and even helps to make decisions about family donor transplantation.

Neurodevelopmental Outcomes after Multiple General Anesthetic Exposures before 5 Years of Age: A Cohort Study.

Anesthesiology

February 2025

Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management, Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; Murdoch Children's Research Institute, Parkville, Victoria, Australia; Department of Paediatrics, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Background: The general anaesthesia or awake-regional anaesthesia in infancy (GAS) trial demonstrated evidence that most neurodevelopmental outcomes at 2 and 5 yr of age in infants who received a single general anesthetic for elective inguinal herniorrhaphy were clinically equivalent when compared to infants who did not receive general anesthesia. More than 20% of the children in the trial had at least one subsequent anesthetic exposure after their initial surgery. Using the GAS database, this study aimed to address whether multiple (two or more) general anesthetic exposures compared to one or no general anesthetic exposure in early childhood were associated with worse neurodevelopmental outcomes at 5 yr.
