Sufficiency of ITD for (biased) human auditory azimuthal perception.

bioRxiv

November 2024

Centro de Matemática, Computação e Cognição, Universidade Federal do ABC, São Bernardo do Campo, SP, 09606-045, Brazil.

Experiments on human auditory perception have shown that interaural time difference (ITD) is sufficient to generate spatial percepts, even though stimuli containing only the ITD cue are perceived as being emitted from inside the head instead of from external locations at specific azimuths. These experiments are thus interpreted as "lateralization" instead of "localization" tasks. In fact, lateralized spatial perception has been quantified using tasks in which participants have to report their estimates by selecting a putative location inside the head, or matching the perceived position to sounds with a given interaural level difference.

Each sense serves a different specific function in spatial perception, and they all form a joint multisensory spatial representation. For instance, hearing enables localization in the entire 3D external space, while touch traditionally only allows localization of objects on the body (i.e.

Externalization of Speech When Listening With Hearing Aids.

Trends Hear

February 2024

Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, Boston University, Boston, MA 02215, USA.

Subjective reports indicate that hearing aids can disrupt sound externalization and/or reduce the perceived distance of sounds. Here we conducted an experiment to explore this phenomenon and to quantify how frequently it occurs for different hearing-aid styles. Of particular interest were the effects of microphone position (behind the ear vs.
