An multichannel analyzer has been designed, and its performance has been evaluated. The multichannel analyzer is embedded into a Field programmable gate array. The design incudes the virtual instrument in order to hand and to visualize the pulse height spectrum. Two commercially available multichannel analyzers using a NaI(Tl) and HPGe detectors were used to obtain the pulse height spectra of Cs, Co and Eu sources and were compared with the pulse height spectra obtained with the embedded multichannel analyzer, being alike the spectra obtained with the commercial multichannel analyzer. Our design is smaller, low cost and it has options to add other features.

Article Synopsis
  • Doctors depend on lab results to diagnose diseases and make treatment decisions, which emphasizes the importance of accurate testing to reduce the need for further tests and enhance patient satisfaction.
  • * Internal quality control and external quality assurance schemes evaluate laboratory performance, and sigma metrics serve as a key indicator of testing errors.
  • * This study assesses sigma scores for 20 routine chemistry parameters using various Total Error Allowables (TEa) from different sources, addressing the lack of consensus on setting TEa goals and its impact on laboratory practices.

Article Synopsis
  • Some biomarkers like C-reactive protein (CRP), smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (SmMHC), and D-dimer (D-D) can help diagnose acute aortic dissection (AAD), but traditional measurement methods are complicated and costly.
  • A new smartphone-based multichannel magnetoelastic (ME) immunosensing device was developed to make monitoring of these biomarkers easier and more accessible for patients, allowing for real-time self-examination.
  • The device showed high sensitivity and accuracy in detecting protein levels compared to advanced lab equipment, making it a promising tool for AAD diagnosis.

On the glow of cremated remains: long-lived green photo-luminescence of heat-treated human bones.

The long-lived green luminescence of human bone (that has been heated to 600 °C for a short duration) is attributed to a carbon quantum dot material (derived from collagen) encapsulated and protected by an inorganic matrix (derived from bone apatite) and is more intense in dense rigid and crystalline parts of (healthy) human bones. The strong collagen-apatite interaction results (upon decomposition) in a protective inorganic environment of the luminescent centers allowing long-lived triplet-based emission of a carbon (quantum) dot-like material at room temperature, as well as resilience against oxidation between 550 and 650 °C. The graphitic black phase (obtained upon heating around 400 °C) is a precursor to the luminescent carbon-based material, that is strongly interacting with the crystalline inorganic matrix.

In recent years, beam manipulation using metasurfaces has evolved from being limited to either a transmission or reflection space to encompassing a full space. However, existing methods still inevitably require complex systems and are unable to achieve continuous and arbitrary phase manipulation. Here, one type of a bilayer metasurface is proposed to simultaneously manipulate reflection and transmission phases continuously and independently, which also makes the optical system more compact without requiring any analyzers and enhances the degree of freedom for full-space beam manipulation.
