Two bis-imidazolium salts 1,8-bis[2'-(N-R-imidazoliumyl)acetylamino]naphthalene chloride (LH·Cl: R = Et; LH·Cl: R = Bu), as well as their four NHC metal complexes [LHAg]Cl (1), [LNi] (2), [LNi] (3) and [LHHg(HgCl)] (4) have been synthesized. In each of the cationic moieties of complexes 1 or 4, there is a groove-like 14-membered macrometallocycle, and each macrometallocycle is consisted of one biscarbene ligand LH and one metal ion (silver(I) ion for 1 and mercury(II) ion for 4). Three 6-membered cycles are contained in each molecule of complexes 2 or 3. Additionally, the selective recognition of macrometallocycle 1 for Cu was studied with the methods of fluorescence and ultraviolet spectroscopy, H NMR titrations, MS and IR spectra. The experimental results display macrometallocycle 1 can discriminate Cu from other cations effectively.

Bis-benzimidazolium salt (S)-2,2'-bis[2″-(N-Et-benzimidazoliumyl)ethoxy]-1,1'-binaphthyl hexafluorophosphate [(S)-LH]·(PF) and bis-imidazolium salts (S)-2,2'-bis[2″-(N-R-imidazoliumyl)ethoxy]-1,1'-binaphthyl hexafluorophosphate [(S)-LH]·(PF) and [(S)-LH]·(PF) (R = ethyl or benzyl), as well as their five N-heterocyclic carbene Hg(II) and Ag(I) complexes such as [(S)-LHg(HgBr)] (1), [(S)-LHg(HgBr)] (2), [(S)-LHg(HgI)] (3), {[(S)-LAg](PF)} (4) and [(S)-LAg](PF) (5) have been prepared and characterized. Each of complexes 1-3 consists of two rings (one 6-membered ring and one 11-membered ring), in which the oxygen atom in the ligand participates in coordination with Hg(II) ion. In complex 4, 1D helical polymeric chain is formed via biscarbene ligand (S)-L and Ag(I) ion.

Eight metal complexes, {[Co(bibim-4)2(H2O)2](NO3)2}n (1), {[Cu(bibim-4)2(NO3)](NO3)}n (2), [Co(bibim-3)(TP)]n (3), [Zn2(bibim-3)]2(OAc)4] (4), [Co(bibim-2)(NO3)2]n (5), [Zn(bibim-4)(NO3)2]n (6), [Zn(bibim-4)(OAc)2]n (7) and [Cd(bibim-4)(NO3)2(DMF)]n (8) (bibim-2 = 1,2-bis(benzimidazol-l-yl)ethane, bibim-3 = 1,3-bis(benzimidazol-l-yl)propane, bibim-4 = 1,4-bis(benzimidazol-l-yl)butane and TP = terephthalate) have been prepared by means of the self-assembly of Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) or Cd(II) salts, dibenzimidazolyl bidentate ligands bearing alkanyl linkers and terephthalic acid. These complexes are structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction analyses. In complexes 1 and 2, 2D network layers with macrometallocycles are formed via metal centers and the ligand bibim-4.
