In agriculture, prolonged use of copper biocides increases the risk of development of Cu resistance and its accumulation in soil, demanding an alternative. In this paper, we report antimicrobial magnesium hydroxide nanoparticles (NPs) as an alternative to Cu biocides with low cytotoxicity. To improved bioavailability, Mg hydroxide NPs were synthesized followed by coating with water-soluble capping agents, trisodium citrate (zeta potential, ξ = -22 mV) or betaine (ξ = +35 mV). Electron microscopy study confirmed the formation of ∼10-nm-sized cubical NPs with citrate and ∼100-nm-sized lamellar NPs with betaine. As-synthesized Mg hydroxide NPs inhibited bacterial growth of X. alfalfae, P. syringae, and E. coli within 4 h. Significant bacterial growth inhibition and killing were observed at 24 h post-treatment. Phytotoxicity studies on tomato plants showed no significant tissue injury. Therefore, Mg hydroxide NPs have the potential to serve as a Cu alternative.

Confronting escalating challenges in energy security and environmental sustainability has intensified interest in renewable sources for fuels and chemicals. Among the most promising alternatives, sugars derived from biomass are emerging as a cornerstone in advancing an environmentally sustainable economy. Within this framework, the development of sunlight-driven carbohydrate oxidation is of significant interest, as it enables the production of a broad spectrum of high-value, bio-sourced chemicals through eco-friendly processes.

Detection of viruses, including coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), via facile, fast, and optical methods is highly important to control pandemics. In this regard, optically-active nanomaterials and nanoparticles (NPs) are a wise choice due to their long-term stability, ease of functionalization, and modifications. In this work, a nanocomposite based on NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) and ZIF-67 metal-organic framework (MOF) was designed and synthesized, and decorated on the surface of the melt-blown mask.

Biosynthesized nanoparticles have a variety of applications, and microorganisms are considered one of the most ideal sources for the synthesis of green nanoparticles. Icerya aegyptiaca (Douglas) is a pest that has many generations per year and can affect 123 plant species from 49 families by absorbing sap from bark, forming honeydew, causing sooty mold, and attracting invasive ant species, leading to significant agricultural losses. The purpose of this work was to synthesize titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO-NPs) from marine actinobacteria and evaluate their insecticidal effects on Icerya aegyptiaca (Hemiptera: Monophlebidae), in addition to explaining their effects on protein electrophoresis analysis of SDS‒PAGE proteins from control and treated insects after 24, 72 and 120 h of exposure.

The unreasonable use of organic dye leads to excessive residues in environmental water, which seriously threatens human health and the natural environment. In this paper, a spherical flower-like magnetic FeO@CoNi layered double hydroxide@silver nanoparticle (FeO@CoNi LDH@Ag NPs) SERS substrate was successfully fabricated electrostatic self-assembly and applied for the sensitive detection of methylene blue (MB) in environmental water. The rapid concentration and separation of the SERS substrate from the water sample could be achieved using an external magnet.

In aquatic environments, the deposition behaviors of nanoplastics (NPs) are closely associated with interfacial interaction between NPs and iron (hydr)oxides minerals, which are typically coupled with solution chemistry and organic matter. However, the roles of solution chemistry and organic matter in the deposition behavior of NPs with iron (hydr)oxides minerals and related interfacial interaction mechanism are still poorly understood. In this study, the deposition behaviors of carboxyl-modified polystyrene nanoparticles (COOH-PSNPs) with magnetite were systematically investigated.
