In this work, we describe a low-cost, two-step synthesis of composites of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCDs) with γ-FeO (NCDs/γ-FeO), which is based on a hydrothermal cum co-precipitation method. The product is a fine powder of particles having an average diameter of 9 ± 3 nm. The physical and chemical properties of NCDs/γ-FeO were studied, as well as the superconducting quantum interference device and Mossbauer analysis of the magnetic properties of these nanocomposites. The interaction of NCDs/γ-FeO nanocomposites with neuron-like cells was examined, showing efficient uptake and low toxicity. Our research demonstrates the use of the nanocomposites for imaging and for controlling the cellular motility. The NCDs/γ-FeO nanocomposites are promising because of their biocompatibility, photostability, and potential selective affinity, paving the way for multifunctional biomedical applications.

Article Synopsis
  • Ratiometric fluorescence detection provides more accurate results compared to single fluorescence assays, and this study develops a probe for measuring sulfadimethoxine (SDM) in food using N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) wrapped in a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8).
  • The probe emits two fluorescence signals at different wavelengths (475 nm for N-CDs and 650 nm for AuNCs), with SDM causing quenching of the AuNCs' fluorescence due to its interaction with bovine serum albumin (BSA), while the N-CDs remain unaffected.

Serum creatinine (CR) is regarded as one of the most sought out prognostic biomarkers in medical evaluation of chronic kidney disease (CKD). In light of the diagnostic significance of CR, the utility of a fluorescence biosensor for its detection in human urine specimens has been explored based on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) across nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and gold nanoparticles (GNPs). A straightforward microwave-assisted synthesis procedure has been adopted to prepare N-CDs (λ = 400 nm, λ = 540 ± 5 nm) with bright green emissions.

The literature data emphasize that nanoparticles might improve the beneficial effects of near-infrared light (NIR) on wound healing. This study investigates the mechanisms of the synergistic wound healing potential of NIR light and silver metal-organic frameworks combined with nitrogen- and sulfur-doped carbon dots (AgMOFsN-CDs and AgMOFsS-CDs, respectively), which was conducted by testing the fibroblasts viability, scratch assays, biochemical analysis, and synchrotron-based Fourier transform infrared (SR-FTIR) cell spectroscopy and imaging. Our findings reveal that the combined treatment of AgMOFsN-CDs and NIR light significantly increases cell viability to nearly 150% and promotes cell proliferation, with reduced interleukin-1 levels, suggesting an anti-inflammatory response.

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is the most common pesticide entering the food chain and posing a threat to human health. This study presents a new electrochemical biosensor based on molybdenum disulfide nanosheets and nitrogen-doped carbon dot nanocomposite (MoS@N-CDs) and kidney bean esterase (KdBE), and it is shown to achieve accurate detection of CPF. MoS@N-CDs were prepared by a facile solvothermal method and characterized by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
