β-Caryophyllene (BCP) is a sesquiterpene that shows high potential in pharmacological applications. However, these have been drastically limited by the respective volatility and poor water solubility. The present study investigates the formation of inclusion complexes between BCP and methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD) and shows that these complexes promote a significant improvement of the anti-inflammatory, gastric protection, and antioxidant activities relative to neat BCP. It is shown that the solubility of BCP is significantly increased through complexation in phase solubility studies. Inclusion complexes with MβCD in solid state were prepared by three different methods, kneading, rotary evaporation, and lyophilization, with the latter confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, H NMR spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics studies. This study provides for the first time a full characterization of inclusion complexes between BCP and MβCD and highlights the impact of complex formation upon pharmacological activity.

Woman in the brain, or the fraught relationship between feminism and mental health.

Med Humanit

December 2024

Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine, The University of Manchester, Manchester, UK

This article explores the complicated relationship between feminism and women's mental health. I discuss the differences and convergences between neurodiversity and mental health and how feminist theory has approached these topics. While contrasting the pathologisation that mental health disciplines can apply to women, feminism has often reduced mental health conditions to mere manifestations of patriarchy.

Objective: Neuronal Intranuclear Inclusion Disease (NIID) is a neurodegenerative disease affecting the central and peripheral nerves. We aimed to assess the pathophysiological features of peripheral nerve dysfunction in NIID.

Methods: We observed six unrelated NIID patients through clinical records, nerve conduction studies, and multiple measures of motor nerve excitability.

Spinal Dumbbell Meningiomas: A Systematic Review.

Ann Ital Chir

December 2024

Neurosurgery Unit, Department of Head and Neck Surgery, Garibaldi Hospital, 95124 Catania, Italy.

Aim: This systematic review aims to synthesize the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic approaches, treatment strategies, and outcomes of spinal dumbbell meningiomas to enhance understanding and improve patient management.

Methods: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, four major databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) were searched until June 2024. Studies included patients diagnosed with spinal dumbbell intradural-extradural meningiomas, focusing on patient demographics, tumor characteristics, diagnostic methods, treatment modalities, and clinical outcomes.

Glabridin, a flavonoid derived from the plant , has garnered significant attention due to its diverse pharmacological effects, including antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic, and hypoglycemic activities. Studies have shown that glabridin exhibits substantial antitumor activity by modulating the proliferation, apoptosis, metastasis, and invasion of cancer cells through the targeting of various signaling pathways, thus indicating its potential as a therapeutic agent for malignant tumors. To enhance its solubility, stability, and bioavailability, several drug delivery systems have been developed, including liposomes, cyclodextrin inclusion complexes, nanoparticles, and polymeric micelles.

Effective communication is crucial in multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) within palliative care, where patient needs can be complex and multifaceted. This article examines the significance of communication in promoting collaborative, patient-centered care while addressing challenges such as professional jargon, hierarchical barriers, and the emotional strain associated with end-of-life care. Leadership plays a vital role in creating an environment of open dialogue, reducing hierarchical dynamics, facilitating conflict resolution, and supporting the emotional well-being of team members.
