A thyroid binding peripheral membrane protein(s) has been characterized in human red cell. Two classes of affinity sites for triiodothyronine have been demonstrated. The high affinity, low capacity site showed values for dissociation constant of 2 X 10(-10)M. The binding activity depended on the presence of free -SH group and showed a high stereospecificity for L-triiodothyronine, L-thyroxine was less potent (about 1,000-fold) than L-triiodothyronine in competing for this site. The results are discussed with respect to their cellular significance.

Objective: To investigate histopathological and biochemical effects of green tea and/or licorice aqueous extracts in thyroid functions in male albino rats intoxicated with Dimethylnitrosamine.
Methods: 40 Male albino rats were divided into two main groups, 20 normal rats and 20 DMN intoxicated rats. Normal rats were subgrouped into 4 equal groups, group A without treatment (controls), group B treated with green tea, group C treated with licorice, group D treated with green tea and licorice.

Background & Objectives: Di (2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a plasticizer commonly used in PVC blood storage bags leaches out in significant amounts into blood during storage. In view of many reports on the toxicity of this compound, it was considered necessary to investigate the effect of DEHP at the low level solubilized in blood on some important hormones in rats and in human blood stored in DEHP plasticized blood bags.
Methods: Rats were administered DEHP at a low level of 750 microg/100 g body weight on alternate days for 14 days.

Through binding to its nuclear receptor (TR), thyroid hormone (T3) activates the expression of the thyroid hormone-responsive genes that are essential for the regulation of energy consumption. Previously, we found that free fatty acids (FFAs) and their CoA esters strongly inhibited the binding of T3 to its nuclear receptor in vitro. In the present study, we have examined the physiological relevance of this inhibitory mechanism.

Triiodothyronine (T3) transport through the mammalian erythrocyte membrane is mediated by a transport system related to the aromatic amino acid transport system T. The T3-binding component of this transport system could be photolabeled with [125I]T3 as a 52-kD protein, and subsequently solubilized with non-ionic detergents. Upon purification by ion-exchange chromatography, the photolabeled 52-kD protein solubilized with octylglucoside (OG) resolved into several peaks, suggesting charge heterogeneity of labeled proteins.

The kinetics of type III iodothyronine deiodinase (5-D) in rat placenta and brain and the role of phospholipids in enzyme activity were determined. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were given either vehicle (control group) or T4 (15 micrograms/100 g bw/day; hyperthyroid group) from the 14th to the 21st day of gestation. Mitochondrial-microsomal fractions of the placenta and brain were used as the source of T4 5-D.
