Drugs and xenobiotics as well as bacterial endotoxins may reach the liver either systematically or after intestinal absorption. Therefore, cells lining the sinusoidal wall form the last barrier before blood constituents get in contact with the parenchymal cells. In this work, the ultrastructure of the cells forming the sinusoidal wall was studied after acetaminophen and endotoxin treatments. Rats received acetaminophen at a dose of 1000 mg/kg body weight by intraperitoneal injection once in acute and four times with a 1-week interval in chronic treatments, and endotoxin at a dose of 5 mg/kg of body weight by intraperitoneal injection once in acute and four times with a 1-week interval in chronic treatments. Tissue samples were collected for scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Swelling of sinusoidal endothelial cells was noticed in both acute intoxicated groups with narrowing of the fenestrae, whereas large gaps were formed in chronic toxicity. Activation of Kupffer cells was a prominent common feature between the four toxicity groups. Interestingly, hepatic stellate cell activation was evident in both chronic acetaminophen and chronic endotoxin groups. Large amounts of collagen fibers were seen surrounding the hepatic stellate cells and in Disse space.

A simple pore microstructure of parallel, identical, and inclined smooth-walled slits in a rigid solid, for which prediction of its geometrical and acoustic properties is straightforward, can yield useful sound absorption. This microstructure should be relatively amenable to 3D printing. Discrepancies between measurements and predictions of normal incidence sound absorption spectra of 3D printed vertical and slanted slit pore samples have been attributed to the rough surfaces of the slit walls and uneven slit cross-sections perpendicular to the printing direction.

Recent experimental studies showed that electrically coupled neural networks like in mammalian inferior olive nucleus generate synchronized rhythmic activity by the subthreshold sinusoidal-like oscillations of the membrane voltage. Understanding the basic mechanism and its implication of such phenomena in the nervous system bears fundamental importance and requires preemptively the connectome information of a given nervous system. Inspired by these necessities of developing a theoretical and computational model to this end and, however, in the absence of connectome information for the inferior olive nucleus, here we investigated interference phenomena of the subthreshold oscillations in the reference system for which the structural anatomical connectome was completely known recently.

The systemic administration of chemotherapeutic drugs involves some reaction and transport mechanisms (RTMs), including perfusion along the blood vessels, extravasation, lymphatic drainage, interstitial and transmembrane transport, and protein association and dissociation, among others. When tissue is subjected to the controlled application of electric pulses (electroporation), the vessel wall and cell membrane are permeabilized, capillaries are vasoconstricted and tissue porosity is modified, affecting the RTMs during electro-chemotherapeutic treatments. This study is a theoretical investigation about the influence of the electric field magnitude (E), number of electroporation treatments (N) and duration of each electroporation protocol (T) on the presence, interaction and rates of the RTMs using in-house computational tools.

Idiopathic myointimal hyperplasia of the mesenteric veins (IMHMV) is a rare entity reported in adults, frequently mimicking inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We report the first case of intestinal ischemia secondary to IMHMV presenting as IBD in a pediatric patient with Down syndrome. Chronic intestinal ischemia is rare in children, and this case emphasizes the need to consider this in the differential, when histopathology is suggestive.
