ZnO-TiO core-shell photocatalysts of a complex flower-like architecture were synthesized, using a well-controlled sol-gel coating reaction of presynthesized ZnO flower-like structures. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance UV-vis and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements, and photoluminescence measurements. Well-defined, core-shell flowers with a wurtzite ZnO core and anatase TiO shells, with variable shell thickness, were acquired by appropriately adjusting the ZnO/Ti precursor mass feed ratio in the reaction. Moreover, hollow TiO flowers were obtained, and they retained their morphology following the etching of the ZnO core in an acidic solution. The photocatalytic performance of the core-shell and hollow semiconductors was evaluated via the decoloration of a methylene blue dye solution under UV-vis irradiation. The core-shell flowers exhibited a higher decoloration rate, when compared with bare ZnO flowers, TiO particles, and hollow TiO flowers, and the photoactivity was dependent on the TiO shell thickness. This was attributed to the efficient separation of the photogenerated holes and electrons at the ZnO-TiO interface. Moreover, the most photoactive core-shell catalyst exhibited excellent reusability and stability for at least three photocatalytic cycles and excellent superhydrophilicity without UV irradiation, which is due to the increased roughness of the flower-like structures.

In quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs), the photoanode provides a stable support for the quantum dots, and promotes the production of photogenerated electrons and the transfer to external circuit. Therefore, it is very important to search for excellent photoanodes for the commercial application of QDSSCs. In this paper, a core-shell ZnO@TiO hexagonal prism heterogeneous structure was prepared by a two-step hydrothermal method.

Highly transparent and self-cleaning ZnO nanorods (NRs) and ZnO@TiO core-shell (CS) nanoarrays were fabricated using the sol-gel dip-coating technique. TiO nanoparticles (NPs) were coated as a shell layer over the hydrothermally grown ZnO NRs. The number of shell layers on the ZnO NRs was varied by modulating the number of dipping cycles from 1 to 3 to optimize their transmittance.

The self-transformation of solid microspheres into complex core-shell and hollow architectures cannot be explained by classical Ostwald ripening alone. Here, coherent X-ray diffraction imaging and 3D X-ray fluorescence were used to visualize in 3D the formation of hollow microparticles of calcium carbonate in the presence of polystyrene sulfonate (PSS). During the dissolution of the core made from 10-25 nm crystals, the shell developed a global spheroidal shape composed of an innermost layer of 30 nm particles containing high PSS content on which oriented vaterite crystals grew with their axis mainly oriented along the meridians.

Humidity and moisture effects, frequently called water poisoning, in surroundings are inevitable for various molecular sensing devices, strongly affecting their sensing characteristics. Here, we demonstrate a water-selective nanostructured dehumidifier composed of ZnO/TiO/CaCl core-shell heterostructured nanowires for molecular sensing spaces. The fabricated nanostructured dehumidifier is highly water-selective without detrimental adsorptions of various volatile organic compound molecules and can be repeatedly operated.

Extremely thin absorber (ETA) solar cells made of ZnO/TiO/SbS core-shell nanowire heterostructures, using P3HT as the hole-transporting material (HTM), are of high interest to surpass solar cell efficiencies of their planar counterpart at lower material cost. However, no dimensional optimization has been addressed in detail, as it raises material and technological critical issues. In this study, the thickness of the SbS shell grown by chemical spray pyrolysis is tuned from a couple of nanometers to several tens of nanometers, while switching from a partially to a fully crystallized shell.
