Biofluid analysis by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is usually hindered by nonspecific interferences. It is challenging to drive targeted molecules towards sensitive areas with specific capture and quantitative recognition in complex biofluids. Herein, a highly specific and quantitative SERS analyzer for small molecule dopamine (DA) in serum is demonstrated on a portable Raman device by virtue of a transducer of mercaptophenylboronic acid (MPBA) and a site-directed decoration of plasmonic Ag dendrites on a superhydrophobic surface. Theoretical simulations of molecular vibrations and charge distributions demonstrate the predomination of Raman surface selection rules in molecular reorientation upon the binding of DA. This recognition event is translated into ratiometric changes in the spectral profile which evidences excellent capability on SERS quantitation. The rules can well distinguish DA from its common interferents including fructose, glucose, sucrose and ascorbic acid which all generate weak but completely opposite spectral changes. Moreover, benefitting from the wettability difference, the target DA in diluted serum can be specifically enriched on a transducer-capped Ag surface, and the adsorption of other interferences is resisted by superhydrophobic features. It paves a new way for labelling a single SERS tag to simultaneously realize the identification and quantification of small molecules in complex biological media.

Sapphire is an attractive material in photonic, optoelectronic, and transparent ceramic applications that stand to benefit from surface functionalization effects stemming from micro/nanostructures. Here we investigate the use of ultrafast lasers for fabricating nanostructures in sapphire by exploring the relationship between irradiation parameters, morphology change, and selective etching. In this approach an ultrafast laser pulse is focused on the sapphire substrate to change the crystalline morphology to amorphous or polycrystalline, which is characterized by examining different vibrational modes using Raman spectroscopy.

Understanding the impact of surface copper valence states on the distribution of electrochemical carbon dioxide products is critical. Herein, CuO@Cu2O with a Cu2+/Cu+ interface was fabricated using wet chemical etching approach. The hollow shape offered a large region for gas adsorption, while the interfacial mixed chemical state of Cu2+/Cu+ with tunable control ratio raised the local density of CHO* and accelerated the carbon-carbon coupling reaction.

However, the reaction mechanism and the specific roles of heteroatom doping, such as N doping, in advancing the CO reduction reaction are still controversial due to the lack of precise control of catalyst surface microenvironments. In this study, we investigated the effects of N doping on the performances for electrochemically converting CO to CO over Ni@NCNT/graphene hybrid structured catalysts (Ni@NCNT/Gr).

Objective: To conduct an exploratory systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of unstable surface training on balance and hop function in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI).
Data Sources: Four major electronic databases were searched, including Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science, from January 1, 2000 to June 20, 2024.
Study Selection: Randomized controlled trials that compare unstable surface training with either general intervention or no intervention in individuals with CAI were included.

Continuously flowing wastewater-treatment processes can be configured for biological and physical selection to form and retain large biological aggregates (LBAs), along with suspended biomass that contains ordinary biological flocs and biomass that has detached from the LBAs. Suspended biomass and LBAs have different solids residence times (SRTs) and mass-transport resistances. Here, mathematical sub-models that describe metabolic processes, a 1-D biofilm, and spherical carriers that can migrate throughout a wastewater-treatment process were combined to simulate a full-scale demonstration train having anaerobic, anoxic, and oxic zones, as well as side-stream enhanced biological phosphorus removal.
