Adipose tissues play an essential role in regulating the metabolic homeostasis and can be found in almost all parts of the body. Excessive adiposity leads to obesity and can contribute to metabolic and other disorders. Adipocytes show remarkable plasticity in their function, which can be pushed toward energy storage, or energy expenditure-a `browning' of fat. Browning is controlled by the cellular milieu of the adipose tissue, with sympathetic innervation and by immune responses as key integrators of the signals that promote browning. Here, we describe the latest contributions to our understanding of how different metabolic stimuli can shape the adipocyte function. We especially focus on the role of the gut microbiota and the negative energy balance in regulating the browning.

Genetic, natal and spatial drivers of social phenotypes in wild great tits.

J Anim Ecol

December 2024

Department of Biology, Edward Grey Institute of Field Ornithology, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK.

In social animals, group dynamics profoundly influence collective behaviours, vital in processes like information sharing and predator vigilance. Disentangling the causes of individual-level variation in social behaviours is crucial for understanding the evolution of sociality. This requires the estimation of the genetic and environmental basis of these behaviours, which is challenging in uncontrolled wild populations.

Corner's Rules and Their Linkages With Twig Functions and Tree Productivity in Simple- and Compound-Leaved Tree Species.

Plant Cell Environ

December 2024

CAS Key Laboratory of Forest Ecology and Silviculture, Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang, China.

Corner's rules are well known in describing inter-specific scaling relationships for plant organ size-related traits, from species with thick terminal stems, large leaves, and sparsely branched twigs to species with opposite traits; however, the implications of organ size on physiological functions and growth performance of trees remain unclear. Moreover, whether Corner's rules spectra differ between tree species with simple and compound leaves is not known. Here, we measured key twig morphological traits, physiological characteristics, and radial growth rates of 27 simple- and 6 compound-leaved tree species in a common garden in Northeast China.

Article Synopsis
  • GPE extract from traditional Chinese medicine shows promise in enhancing growth performance and meat quality in ducks.
  • The study involved 480 ducks receiving different levels of GPE over 7 weeks, with the highest dosage (600 mg/kg) leading to significant health benefits.
  • Findings indicated improvements in serum antioxidant capacity, immune function, and meat characteristics like moisture content and tenderness, suggesting GPE could be a viable alternative to antibiotics in poultry farming.

Introduction: Inappropriate reactive (provoked) aggression is common in various psychiatric disorders, including Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and, to a lesser extent, Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Less is known about proactive (unprovoked) aggression in these patients, with mixed findings in the literature. Drawing from the current evidence, we expect higher trait aggression in both patient groups and higher behavioral proactive aggression and physiological arousal in patients with BPD compared to both MDD and healthy participants (HC).

Disentangling the genetic overlap between ischemic stroke and obesity.

Diabetol Metab Syndr

Department of Neurosurgery, The Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University, Guiyang, Guizhou Province, People's Republic of China.

Objective: Obesity has been recognized as a risk factor for cerebrovascular diseases, with observational studies suggesting a heightened incidence of stroke. However, the genetic epidemiology field has yet to reach a consensus on the causal relationship and genetic overlap between ischemic stroke (IS) and obesity.

Methods: We utilized linkage disequilibrium score regression, high-definition likelihood, and local analysis of variant associations to assess the genetic correlation between body mass index (BMI) and IS.
