Stimuli-responsive polymers have received growing attention in recent years owing to their wide applications in diverse fields. A novel stimuli-responsive polymer, based on oligo(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (OEGDA) and methacrylic acid (MAA), P(OEGDA-MAA), is prepared by precipitation polymerization and is shown to have a LCST-type VPTT (volume phase transition temperature) at 33 °C in water and a UCST-type VPTT at 43 °C in ethanol, all at concentration of 1 mg/mL. Both VPTTs are strongly concentration and pH dependent, providing an easy way to tune the phase transition temperature. The polymer is characterized with regard to its composition and its morphology in water and in ethanol at different concentration. The two transitions are studied and interpreted based on the results. This work provides a novel way for the preparation of a new type of stimuli-responsive polymer with great potential for different applications, particularly those in biomedical areas because PEG-based stimuli-responsive polymers are known to be nontoxic and non-immunogenic.

Anionic Oligo(ethylene glycol)-Based Molecular Brushes: Thermo- and pH-Responsive Properties.

Polymers (Basel)

Anionic thermo- and pH-responsive copolymers were synthesized by photoiniferter reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (PI-RAFT). The thermo-responsive properties were provided by oligo(ethylene glycol)-based macromonomer units containing hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties. The pH-responsive properties were enabled by the addition of 5-20 mol% of strong (2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic) and weak (methacrylic) acids.

Precise Preparation of Size-Uniform Two-Dimensional Platelet Micelles Through Crystallization-Assisted Rapid Microphase Separation Using All-Bottlebrush-Type Block Copolymers with Crystalline Side Chains.

Polymer nanoparticles with low curvature, especially two-dimensional (2D) soft materials, are rich in functions and outstanding properties and have received extensive attention. Crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) of linear semicrystalline block copolymers is currently a common method of constructing 2D platelets of uniform size. Although accompanied by high controllability, this CDSA method usually and inevitably requires a longer aging time and lower assembly concentration, limiting the large-scale preparation of nanoaggregates.

Stubborn biofilm infections pose serious threats to public health. Clinical practices highly rely on mechanical debridement and antibiotics, which often fail and lead to persistent and recurrent infections. The main culprits are 1) persistent bacteria reviving, colonizing, and rejuvenating biofilms, and 2) secondary pathogen exposure, particularly in individuals with chronic diseases.

The semisynthetic derivatization of natural products is crucial for their continued development as antibiotics. While commercial pleuromutilin derivatives depend on amines for solubility, we demonstrate the high activity and solubility of oligoethylene glycol-substituted pleuromutilins achieved via a one-pot deprotection/attachment approach using thiolates protected as thioesters. The bifunctional linker synthesis is versatile and can be broadly applied to other chemistries.

This study explores the liquid crystalline properties of novel amphiphilic β-cyclodextrin derivatives functionalized with seven oligoethylene glycol chains at the primary face, terminated with either an O-methyl or an O-cyanoethyl group, and fourteen hydrophobic aliphatic chains (elaidic or oleic acids) at the secondary face. These derivatives were designed to study the impact of chain conformation and terminal group polarity on their mesomorphic behavior. Thermal, microscopic, and X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the elaidic derivatives form columnar hexagonal mesophases, with the O-cyanoethyl derivative undergoing a slow, temperature-dependent transition to a bicontinuous cubic phase.
