The wings of honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) usually produce bending and torsional deformations during flapping wing movement. These deformations endow honeybees with perfect aerodynamic control to escape predators and exploit scattered resources. However, the mechanisms by which honeybee wings recover from large deformations are unclear. This study demonstrates that honeybee wings are super-elastic that they can recover rapidly from one extreme contorted state to their original position. A comparative experiment is conducted to evaluate the difference in super-elastic recovery between attached and detached wings. Results show that the structural stiffness of wings is affected by the reticulate vein and the haemolymph pressure generated by the blood circulation. Further analysis indicates that the haemolymph pressure can increase the stiffness of honeybee wings, especially that of the subcostal veins. This phenomenon shortens the recovery time of wing deflection behaviour.

Flying insects have developed two distinct adaptive strategies to minimize wing damage during collisions. One strategy includes an elastic joint at the leading edge, which is evident in wasps and beetles, while another strategy features an adaptive and deformable leading edge, as seen in bumblebees and honeybees. Inspired by the latter, a novel approach has been developed for improving collision recovery in micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) by mimicking the principle of stiffness anisotropy present in the leading edges of these insects.

Deformed wing virus (DWV) has long been identified as a critical pathogen affecting honeybees, contributing to colony losses through wing deformities, neurological impairments, and reduced lifespan. Since DWV also affects other pollinators, it poses a significant threat to global pollination networks. While honeybees have been the focal point of DWV studies, emerging research indicates that this RNA virus is not host-specific but rather a generalist pathogen capable of infecting a wide range of insect species, including other bee species such as bumblebees and solitary bees, as well as wasps and ants.
