Aim: Vitamin D stimulates production of the endogenous antimicrobial peptides cathelicidin and β-defensin-2, which are expressed in the urinary tract. We investigated vitamin D status and levels of cathelicidin and β-defensin-2 and their association with urinary tract infection (UTI).

Methods: The study included 120 children under three years of age: 76 children with UTIs and 44 otherwise healthy children with congenital hydronephrosis. Serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol levels were measured by direct competitive electro-chemiluminescence immunoassay, and plasma cathelicidin and β-defensin-2 concentrations were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Results: We found that vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency are prevalent in young children (21%). Serum vitamin D levels negatively correlated with age and were significantly lower in girls. Levels of vitamin D positively correlated with levels of cathelicidin but not with β-defensin-2. Low concentrations of vitamin D were associated with UTIs in girls, but we did not see any correlation with the recurrence of infection at one-year follow-up.

Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is common and may prove to be a risk factor for UTIs especially in girls. We hypothesise that adequate supplementation with vitamin D may become a way to prevent first-time UTIs.

Inappropriate and excessive use of antibiotics is responsible for the rapid development of antimicrobial resistance, which is associated with increased patient morbidity and mortality. There is an urgent need to explore new antibiotics or alternative antimicrobial agents. a commensal microorganism but is also responsible for numerous infections.

: Excessive body fatness is the basis of many diseases, especially civilization-related ones. The aim of this study is to analyze the body composition and serum levels of selected antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in patients with basal cell carcinoma (BCC), in comparison to healthy controls (HCs), and investigate whether any specific parameter significantly increases the risk of BCC development. : The body composition and measurements of serum levels of cathelicidin and human-beta-defensin-2 were analyzed in a group of 100 subjects (50 patients with BCC and 50 HCs).

Cathelicidins are a group of cationic, amphipathic peptides that play a vital role in the innate immune response of many vertebrates, including humans. Produced by immune and epithelial cells, they serve as natural defenses against a wide range of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In humans, the cathelicidin LL-37 is essential for wound healing, maintaining skin barrier integrity, and combating infections.

Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Life, Hiroshima University, Higashi-Hiroshima, Hiroshima, Japan.

The aim of this study was to investigate changes in milk conditions and antimicrobial components in goats during 8 weeks prepartum and 1 week postpartum. Milk was collected weekly from seven prepartum goats 8 weeks before the due day, immediately, and 1 week after parturition. Milk color scores and the concentration of antimicrobial components (cathelicidin-7 and S100A8) were significantly increased prepartum.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, but the primary factors triggering this inflammation remain unclear. Extracellular or cell-free DNA (exDNA) originates from virtually all tissues, being released during cell death, and stimulates the innate immune system. Our study was designed as an observational, cross-sectional cohort study of children with CKD (both before and after kidney transplantation) and controls to analyze associations between exDNA, markers of inflammation, and cardiovascular health.
