Over the last centuries, , a plant species belonging to the genus Aloe, have been extensively studied for various therapeutic activities, including anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-cancer activity, as well as immunoregulative and hepatoprotective properties, although some of these claimed efficacies are controversial as demonstrated by some of the recent studies. In spite of the intensive historic and recent use of this herb and its extracts in various areas, a well-balanced, systematic review seems crucial in order to gain in-depth comprehensive knowledge about this plant and to reflect and revive the use of in biomedical sciences. This review will focus on summarization of the pharmacological activities and clinical studies of and various extracts, as well as its extensive application in food chemistry, and will also discuss the future prospects of biomedical applications of this herb.

Skin-on-a-chip models provide physiologically relevant platforms for studying diseases and drug evaluation, replicating the native skin structures and functions more accurately than traditional 2D or simple 3D cultures. Unlabelled: Fibroblasts are considered a key player in the wound healing process. Although this cellular family is constituted by several distinct subtypes, dermal fibroblasts are crucial thanks to their ability to secrete pro-regenerative growth factors, extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and their immune and anti-inflammatory role. Sophorolipids (SL), sophorosides (SS) and glucolipids (G), mono-unsaturated (C18:1) or saturated (C18:0), glycolipids derived from microbial fermentation of wild type or engineered yeast , constitute a novel sustainable class of bio-based chemicals with interesting physicochemical characteristics, which allow them to form soft diverse structures from hydrogels to vesicles, micelles or complex coacervates with potential interest in skin regeneration applications.
